• Maple City / Red Maple City — Lumina’s only modern city when Yu Lian begins investigating the planet. Following the Red Maple Factory’s revival, its permanent population exceeds five million 243 260 1032.
• Red Maple Factory — The industrial enterprise beside Maple City, central to employment, alloy production, and the planet’s recovery 260 277.
• Serrogu City — A nearly ten-thousand-year-old sacred city in the Serro Great Forest. After almost twenty years without inhabitants, it becomes a gathering place for separatists and the Myriad Spirit Cult 244.
• New Serro City — Built on the cleared Serrogu ruins, with a municipal square, City Hall, light-rail station, and a fountain-surrounded statue 1072.
• Barren Tombs — Home to the Arid Stone tribe, whose members maintained a nomadic way of life for centuries before contacting the planetary administration 1654.

Luminans

• Physiology — Four-armed aliens with two arms suited to gross movements and two to fine movements; descriptions compare them to upright mantises or giant longhorn beetles 243 1747.
• Attachment to Home — Generally reluctant to travel between stars. Their difficulty adapting to unfamiliar environments becomes evident when twelve of eighty technicians fall seriously ill during their first week on New Jade Gate 261 787.
• Hunting Traditions — Some mountain and lakeside tribes traditionally mark adulthood through group hunts of Terror Birds or Armored Crocodiles. Claims that every Luminan must kill a Terror Bird barehanded are explicitly rejected as rumors 261.
• Psionics — Not considered a psionic-sensitive species. Reaching the Second Ring through self-study is consequently treated as exceptional 1482.

Wildlife

• Lumina Terror Birds — Fierce predators weighing more than a ton on average 261.
• Armored Crocodiles — Similarly massive predators hunted collectively by some tribes 261.
• Dragon-like Mounts — Used by Luminan warriors in battle; one mounted warrior destroys four Commonwealth armored airships within a minute 278.

History

Imperial Expansion and Separatism

The Empire forcibly accelerated the Luminans’ development during the Galaxy’s Age of Expansion. Imperial abuses and displacement from sacred lands fostered hostility toward the Empire, temporarily giving Earthlings and Luminans a common cause. Relations later deteriorated as Luminans opposed the Commonwealth government and their perceived position as second-class citizens 189 244 260.

Separatism developed through multiple rebel factions rather than a single unified movement. The Lumina Divine Army was among the largest, while the Moda Black Flag Army supplied rebels through piracy and transport operations. Imperial support for the independence movement was later confirmed through Kormo’s confession 147 307.

Serrogu Crisis

The Myriad Spirit Cult and Luminan rebels gathered in Serrogu City to summon the entity worshipped as the Sky God. Its manifestation absorbed some of the assembled followers. Yu Lian entered the underground altar and exposed both the entity’s identity as the Myriad-Headed Beast and the cult’s intention to use the rebels as sacrifices 284 285.

Kormo was subsequently captured. He admitted that an Imperial patron wanted the beast’s life core, offering increased support for Luminan independence and inclusion as an Imperial vassal state in exchange 307.

Industrial Recovery

Yu Lian treated the Red Maple Factory’s decline as the central problem behind Lumina’s instability. He gained Babarou’s support, helped restore the enterprise, and proposed a ten-year development plan combining expanded mining and agriculture with cold-resistant crops. The Workers’ Congress appointed Colonel Snyder Rug as director, with Babarou becoming deputy director and mine manager 260 277 353.

The factory’s expansion transformed Maple City into a metropolis and supported the urbanization of other settlements. A rebuilt armory supplied firearms to remote villages, improving their ability to resist pirate raids. New Serro City’s completion was celebrated on the final day of Commonwealth Calendar 832 by more than ten thousand Luminan workers and five thousand human workers 1032 1072.

Wartime Evacuation

Lumina entered wartime mobilization early. The Red Maple Factory Guard—effectively the planet’s Marine Corps—eventually exceeded one hundred thousand personnel; more than thirty thousand died during the Sede war of attrition 1815.

Under Planet Administrative Officer Ye Zhixia, 500,000 technicians evacuated to New Shenzhou, carrying away the factory’s technical backbone. Its Solar Furnaces were dismantled, while shipyard and armory facilities were dismantled or concealed. Most surviving guards accompanied the retreat; remaining personnel were described by local officials as having become nomads 1815.

Imperial Occupation

Imperial forces established posts in major cities and Red Maple Factory production areas without broadly disrupting civilian life. The occupation administration granted tax relief, invested in infrastructure, and permitted a planetary parliament and public-order troops under conditions of Imperial loyalty 2005 2256.

By the fleet’s later contact with Lumina, basic order and factory production had resumed. Resistance forces, which had previously fought the garrison, withdrew into the mountains while maintaining contact with Maple City 2256.
