Background / History

Hesen was originally a priest of the Sandfolk's local religion. After Earthlings incorporated the entire planet into their territory, he led his tribe in resistance, awakened as a psionics, and obtained a systematic method of cultivation. Over decades, he trained disciples and became the Sandfolk's most revered spiritual leader and their foremost expert, though actual secular authority remained with tribal chieftains and former city-state kings. 18

By the siege of Tulon Port, Hesen was elderly and in poor health: his posture had weakened, his scales had grayed, his sight had blurred, and he required constant medicine. Despite this decline, he was more powerful than in his youth. 37

Hesen approved the Sandfolk war effort despite knowing it would cause heavy losses, hoping the conflict would force the Earthlings to negotiate. Before the campaign, he entrusted Kazhan with leading young Sandfolk abroad to study and preserve a future for their people. 37

During the Battle of Tulon, the Earthlings captured the Alchi Highlands artillery position and turned it against the Sandfolk. Hesen survived the bombardment by raising stone golems as cover, but was wounded and initially believed that Sandfolk leaders or the goblin artillery crews had betrayed him. 50

After Miyun rescued him, Hesen attempted to regroup fleeing troops and locate Kazhan, whom he considered the Sandfolk's future. He ultimately chose to hold off the pursuing Earthling forces so Miyun could escape and search for Kazhan. 50

Hesen fought Ash Steyn, Yu Lian, and Yaxiu with his elemental and Control-type psionics. Once his attacks failed to overcome them, he lost his will to continue fighting and attempted to flee. Baka's power axe caught Hesen's chest wound and cleaved him into two halves. 51 52

Appearance

In old age, Hesen remained an imposing Sandfolk elder despite visible physical decline. His combat manifestations made him appear far more formidable than his frail condition suggested.

He was strategic and capable of self-criticism. After the Sandfolk's armored vehicles were captured and used against them, he admitted that Kazhan had been right: they should have trained dedicated crews for at least a year before deploying the tanks. 50

His prestige did not make him immune to fear or misjudgment. The artillery reversal left him suspicious of betrayal, and his confidence broke after Yu Lian and Yaxiu overwhelmed his techniques. 50 52
