Then the effect was naturally
very good.
Heinselo was now being treated very unkindly.
"Squad leader, those guys barely show themselves!"
"I can't even see them!"
"There are still people in those fortresses firing machine guns. What do we do?"
Olesian's tactics came from Lynn, and Lynn's tactics came from Blue Star.
On Blue Star, digging trenches across open ground was unheard of.
So whether they were facing artillery or machine guns, their first thought under fire was to change positions.
But changing positions created a window when they couldn't fire, so they couldn't move.
Meanwhile, an advance using trenches dug out of nowhere would keep heat weapons from unleashing their full power.
The advantage of heat weapons would remain, but it would be diminished. Once the trenches met, the battle would turn into something like street fighting.
This tactic had been used often throughout Blue Star's history, especially by poor countries.
For example, when ammunition was scarce, they would wait until the enemy was close before firing.
After three shots, they would charge with bayonets.
Street fighting shortened the gap between them and the enemy.
But in a world without magic, they couldn't conjure trenches out of thin air. They had no shields or armor that could stop bullets, and there were no tough fighters who could dodge or slice bullets out of the air.
At best, this tactic could bring the exchange ratio to one soldier from a rich country for every two from a poor one.
In more hard-fought battles, an exchange ratio of one to one might be achieved.
It was a desperate way to fight.
But it was the best way to narrow the gap with an industrialized nation.
Digging trenches through buildings and constructing pillboxes were, in essence, ways of building a city and
