After all, something originally conceived to give the Empire a fighting chance had now become a stumbling block for their own allies. No matter how you looked at it,
the people involved had to feel awkward.
If Lynn said something serious, it would only make them feel more guilty or embarrassed.
Of course, there was another possibility.
A passionate young man offering heartfelt comfort, melting the ice with his ardor.
Lynn adjusted his irreverent attitude and ushered the two of them along, apologizing as he went. "Sorry. I was wrong."
"I was only trying to lighten the mood."
"Yuffie, don't blame yourself. No one could have predicted this."
"People in high positions let their asses do the thinking."
"Not their heads."
"Lilim, weren't you worried, too?
I wanted to lighten the mood a bit."
Only then did Lilim catch on.
She suddenly realized what he meant. "Oh, right. Yuffie's tactics were meant to deal with us, and now they're being used against us."
Yuffie looked at Lynn with mixed feelings. "So you were trying to cheer me up?"
"I was thinking of myself, too." Lynn wore the wicked grin of a spoiled young master and reached out to pinch Yuffie's cheek. "Or do you think you can accept my comfort with a clear conscience?"
Comfort could sometimes be a burden in itself, especially a moral one.
It could make the person being comforted feel awful.
The more you tried to console them, the worse they might feel.
The right thing to
