Hearing the shocked cries behind him, Yamamoto kept his guard up against Kenma ahead while glancing sideways, diverting part of his attention outside.
But that single glance made his expression freeze instantly.
He could not help turning around and looking outside again.
The area surrounding the First Division barracks was covered by a transparent barrier.
Several people clad in Onmitsukidō uniforms stood at the four sides and corners of the barrier, forming hand seals to maintain it.
The earlier explosion had destroyed most of the First Division barracks.
Since the First Division barracks stood on relatively high ground, they could easily see the Seireitei beyond the barrier from where they stood.
At that moment, flames of war blazed everywhere across the Seireitei.
Dark clouds blanketed the sky, leaving the court shrouded in darkness. Flames rose throughout the city, thick black smoke billowing into the air. Most of the Seireitei's famous buildings
had been destroyed, leaving devastation as far as the eye could see.
Compared to the bright, peaceful scene before the captains' meeting had begun, it was like heaven and earth.
Every inch of the inner court was now soaked in the blood of Shinigami.
Even within Yamamoto's First Division, soldiers clad in heavy armor filled every corner, waging bloody battles against the stubbornly resisting First Division members.
Calling it a battle was generous. In Yamamoto's eyes, it was not even a battle, merely one-sided slaughter.
Whether Kido or Zanpakuto, the Shinigami members had no way of harming those heavy suits of armor. They could not even leave a scratch.
Yet the heavily armored soldiers could easily defeat the Shinigami with the various weapons in their hands.
