Nature

• In Soul Society, a Shinigami is not an omnipotent deity but a profession comparable to a samurai or ninja, albeit one whose strongest members possess extraordinary destructive power 9 216.
• Shinigami are Lost Souls whose bodies are formed from gathered Reishi; this does not constitute true resurrection or erase the boundary between life and death 149 212.
• Souls who can feel Hunger possess the aptitude to become Shinigami. Such souls can eat normally and may be cultivated as candidates 4 9.
• In other worlds, the title is often understood as that of a god governing death or the afterlife. Kenma's followers identify him as the Shinigami who governs the Netherworld and Yomi 159 191.
• A soul's Reishi body closely resembles its living body. Research described by Shisui suggests that body and soul influence one another, allowing traits that deeply affected a person during life to remain within their soul after death 212.
• High Spiritual Might produces unusually dense Reishi tissue. Kenma, Shisui, and Yakumi withstand the cold of the Underworld Land in their spiritual bodies even though a Gigai freezes and shatters there 131.
• Transferring a soul to Soul Society is not the same as reincarnation. Kenma explicitly explains this distinction when offering Whitebeard another existence in the afterlife 39.

Qualifications and Training

• Shino Academy trains professional Shinigami and evaluates prospective students for aptitude, resolve, and their existing foundation 15.
• An Asauchi is the primitive form of a Zanpakutō and the mark of becoming a Shinigami 3.
• A soul's Reishi body is categorized by Spiritual Might rank, determined by how tightly its Reishi is bound 212.
• Natural aptitude varies dramatically. Among the Uchiha, roughly one-seventh to one-eighth of the clan could feel Hunger, a rate considered exceptionally high 9.
• Academy selection is open to both Lost Souls from Rukongai and descendants of noble families. For most talented ordinary souls, entering the academy is their principal opportunity to obtain an Asauchi and prepare for the profession 12 15.
• Previous combat experience can provide a useful foundation, but power acquired in another world does not automatically confer equivalent strength in Soul Society 2.
• Spiritual Might and Zanpakutō awakening do not necessarily advance together. Shisui reaches Second-Class Spiritual Might while still unable to hear his Zanpakutō's voice 92 93.

Contract-Assisted Cultivation

• Kenma's Kiritsugu can lend Spiritual Pressure through a contract, allowing recipients to train with borrowed power and potentially cultivate Spiritual Pressure of their own 66.
• Whitebeard and other contracted souls from the Pirate World develop their own Spiritual Pressure through training, although their cultivation is slower than that of normal Shinigami 66.
• Kenma offers this route to Tenshin Shoun, Oda Nobunaga, and Yoichi, who originally lacked the natural aptitude to become Shinigami 66.
• Contracts also remove the rejection experienced by foreign souls in Soul Society. After this connection is established, hunger can reveal aptitude that was not previously apparent 47.
• Receiving power does not immediately grant control over it. Ace initially cannot restrain the Spiritual Pressure lent to him, forcing Kenma to withdraw it before nearby souls disperse 46.

Combat System

Spiritual Pressure

• Spiritual Pressure is the decisive factor in combat between Shinigami; a vast disparity can render techniques ineffective 30 171.
• Shinigami use Spiritual Pressure for offense, defense, perception, and high-speed movement 91.
• Spiritual perception is especially important in battle. An opponent with no Spiritual Pressure can evade this sense and become difficult to detect 91.
• Spiritual Sight supplements physical vision and is generally more important to Shinigami than ordinary eyesight. The blind Kaname Tosen has especially refined Spiritual Sight and other senses 261.
• Kenma demonstrates suppression of an enemy ability by surviving Soifon's Two-Hit Kill and erasing its Bee Crest with his superior Spiritual Pressure 171.
• Spiritual Pressure can be concentrated into a nearly tangible defensive or offensive medium. During his clash with Yamamoto, Kenma forms a dense blade of Spiritual Pressure that prevents their physical swords from touching 303.
• Unrestrained Spiritual Pressure can endanger nearby weaker souls, making control important outside direct combat as well 46.

Four Shinigami Skills

• Shinigami need not rely equally on all four skills. Yoruichi abandons the Zanpakutō as her primary combat method and concentrates on White Strike, Kidō, and Flash Step 145.
• Healing spiritual techniques also support Shinigami operations. Tenjirō Kirinji possesses healing expertise surpassing Unohana's and invents restorative hot springs 267.

Zanpakutō

• A Zanpakutō is formed when a Shinigami pours their essence into an Asauchi, awakening a new soul linked to their own 108.
• Its form and abilities originate from its wielder's soul, making every Zanpakutō distinct 3.
• Learning a Zanpakutō's true name enables Shikai, its initial release; Bankai is the higher release and can drastically increase a Shinigami's power 3.
• Bankai typically raises Spiritual Pressure to roughly five to ten times that of Shikai, making it a Shinigami's principal trump card 145.
• A Shinigami's Zanpakutō is fundamentally their own power. At sufficient cultivation, some can activate Shikai without physically wielding the blade 108.
• Bankai does not follow a single pattern of evolution. Soifon's release changes a small assassination weapon into a massive missile, while Kenma's Severance preserves its basic nature but gains greater scope and efficiency 171 206.
• Bankai can impose practical disadvantages despite its strength. Soifon's missile is heavy, conspicuous, and difficult for her to control, conflicting with her preferred assassination methods 171.
• Some Bankai have effects extending over a broad area and may threaten allies as well as enemies. Aizen identifies this danger when Kyōraku Shunsui's Bankai spreads its altered Spiritual Pressure across the battlefields 298.

Advanced Development

• Kuchiki Kyoka theorizes that, at a still-higher realm, the divided souls of a Shinigami and their Zanpakutō may fuse and elevate the wielder into a new dimension; he acknowledges that this remains unverified speculation 108.
• Hollowification is presented as another method for a Shinigami who has reached their limit to break through their existing boundary 226.
• Kenma and Aizen both describe having reached a stage beyond which ordinary Shinigami cultivation offers no further advancement, prompting their discussion of Hollowification 217.
• A Hollowified Shinigami in Aizen's experiments can gather Spiritual Pressure at its mouth and fire a Cero 261.
• Aizen's expanding experiments cause ordinary souls and investigating Shinigami to disappear. Kenma assists the research and conceals evidence of its effects 268.
• The experiments ultimately affect Kensei, Mashiro, Hiyori, Hirako, Rabū, Rōjūrō, Lisa, and Hachigen, producing white masks or spreading white material across their bodies 274.

Organizations and Hierarchy

• The Gotei 13 is Soul Society's major Shinigami military force. Its captains stand at the pinnacle of ordinary Shinigami authority and strength 9 216.
• The Seireitei is the capital of Soul Society and the center of Shinigami institutions, noble authority, and military organizations 216.
• Graduates of Shino Academy are assigned to organizations according to their skills and preferences, including the Gotei 13, Kidō Corps, and Stealth Force 113.
• Great Noble Families possess exceptional political status within Soul Society, while the Gotei 13 are expected to protect them 9.
• Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni is the Gotei 13's Captain-General and is known as the strongest Shinigami of the past thousand years 16 100.
• Zero Division guards the Soul King Palace. Its members include figures whose inventions changed Soul Society, such as Shutara Senjumaru, creator of the Shinigami uniform, and Tenjirō Kirinji, inventor of healing hot springs 266 267.
• Kiryū Kirishiki's development of Gikongan technology leads to her promotion from the Gotei 13 to Zero Division 103 266.
• Under Kenma, the Onmitsukidō expands its personnel and authority, absorbing much of the Second Division's resources while recruiting souls from other worlds 127 159 216.

Duties and the Balance of the Three Worlds

• Shinigami serve as balancers of the Three Worlds. Quincy destruction of souls is identified as a threat to this balance 255.
• Kenma recounts that, before a campaign against surviving Quincy in the Human World, Shinigami killed a batch of souls in Soul Society to restore the balance 255.
• Kenma and Takahisa were caught in this purge. Takahisa obtained Kenma's survival by agreeing to commit seppuku, with the leading Shinigami acting as his second 255.
• This experience informs Kenma's contempt for Shinigami and his rejection of claims that their duties confer inherent honor or dignity. He later reveals that he killed the Shinigami who spared him and sent the man's family to their deaths 106 255.
• Yamamoto defines the Gotei 13's mission as protecting Seireitei, demanding that its members defend the court with their lives 292 312.

Defeat and Reorganization

Kuchiki Kyoka's rebellion severely damages the Gotei 13, killing several captains and forcing the organization to rebuild over the following two years. Despite punishment from Central 46, it remains Soul Society's largest armed organization during this recovery 105 127.

Kenma's later rebellion simultaneously strikes Shinigami barracks, noble estates, Shino Academy, the Technical Development Bureau, and the Kidō Corps. His armored soldiers overwhelm ordinary division members, whose Kidō and Zanpakutō attacks cannot damage their armor. Minato reports that the Gotei 13 barracks have fallen and fewer than half the Shinigami have survived; Kenma orders prisoners guarded and the Onmitsukidō to assume Seireitei's duties 288 292.

After Seireitei's conquest, Kenma directs Sengoku to consider recruiting surrendered Shinigami. Yamamoto and the other captured captains survive and recover under guard, while Kenpachi Azashiro remains hidden in Muken, which Kenma orders sealed 307.

Yamamoto initially rejects cooperation and denounces surrendered Shinigami as traitors to the Gotei 13's purpose. During a later prison visit, Kenma activates the Mangekyō Sharingan while proposing a rebuilt Seireitei; Yamamoto's hostility then changes into inexplicable fondness and admiration. The passage establishes this altered attitude, but does not yet show a completed agreement to resume service 312.

Equipment and Technology

• Senkaimon are Soul Society technology used for passage between realms. Ordinary Shinigami apply to their superiors to use the gate in Seireitei, while noble families possess specialized versions 4.
• Kenma combines a noble-family Senkaimon with his own spatial-severing Zanpakutō ability to transport souls from other worlds; the spatial severance is his ability, not an inherent function of every Shinigami 3 4.
• Gigai provide an alternative body, but may lack the resilience of a powerful Shinigami's Reishi body 131.
• Kisuke Urahara creates Gigai capable of suppressing a Shinigami's Spiritual Pressure 280.
• The Technical Development Bureau's inventions improve the convenience of Shinigami operations and receive widespread approval 270.

Weaknesses and Restrictions

• Muramasa can brainwash a Shinigami's Zanpakutō, turn it against its master, or separate it from the wielder's soul; this can deprive a Shinigami of their primary combat ability 90.
• A Shinigami who has not awakened a Zanpakutō is unaffected by Muramasa's Zanpakutō-targeting ability 93.
• Hell is a domain that Shinigami are forbidden from interfering with, even when the Hell Gate opens to claim sinful souls 225.
• Despite their title and spiritual bodies, Shinigami cannot subjectively cross the boundary between life and death 149.
• Kenjaku's belief that Shinigami will not intervene in the affairs of the living is his interpretation of Kenma's behavior, not an established universal restriction on the profession 228.
• Exceptional abilities can bypass a wielder's normal control of their weapon. Kenma uses a prior contract to seize Kisuke Urahara's Benihime and demonstrates its Shikai, depriving Kisuke of his principal trump card 283.
• The physical Zanpakutō can remain vulnerable even when its ability is powerful enough to oppose an attack. Yamamoto's extreme Bankai heat melts a notch into Kenma's sword and burns away much of the Spiritual Pressure and Severance carried by his slash 304 305.
• Unstable Hollowification can produce dangerous, difficult-to-control subjects and spreading bodily transformations rather than a safe advancement 261 274.
• Yhwach possesses a newly developed, still-unstable device intended to counter a Shinigami's Bankai. He attempts to retrieve it against Kenma but is defeated before demonstrating its effect 248.
