Ch. 21Going to the New World

After Yoruichi stormed out, Kenma agreed to let Shisui skip a grade if he had mastered the curriculum, then explained why he intended to keep Kisuke Urahara alive. Kenma ended by ordering Shisui to take a few days off so they could travel to a new world filled with oceans.

  • Yoruichi left Kenma's study in anger, still seeking a way to save Kisuke Urahara and Hachishō Ryo from the Second Division's cells.
  • Kenma approved Shisui's request to skip a grade if Shisui had mastered his current studies and skills.
  • Kenma told Shisui that Yoruichi distrusted him and would not believe his claim that he had not deliberately framed Kisuke Urahara.
  • Kenma said he would keep Kisuke Urahara alive because Urahara was useful as leverage over Yoruichi and was too talented to waste.
  • Kenma told Shisui to request a few days off from Shino Academy and accompany him to a new world filled with oceans.

Ch. 22The So-Called Three Elites

Yoruichi complained to her father, Shihōin Chunyan, about her fiancé Kenma, but Chunyan defended Kenma and explained why he considered him an exceptional choice for the Shikokuin Family. He recounted Kenma’s history and the origins of the Three Elites, leaving Yoruichi asking about Aizen Sosuke.

  • Yoruichi visited her sick father, Shihōin Chunyan, and told him about her dispute with Kenma and Kisuke Urahara.
  • Chunyan blamed Kisuke for violating regulations and praised Kenma for handling the matter properly, warning that Yoruichi and the Shikokuin Family could have faced punishment.
  • When Chunyan asked what she knew about Kenma’s past, Yoruichi admitted she had never learned about it.
  • Chunyan told Yoruichi that Kenma had joined a criminal organization after arriving in Soul Society, then attended Shino Academy and joined the Eleventh Division.
  • Chunyan explained how he had followed Kuchiki Ginrei’s example by choosing Kenma as a son-in-law, and recalled that Kenma was one of the Three Elites praised by the Captain-General as having the potential to become Pillars.
  • Yoruichi asked Chunyan who the third member of the Three Elites was, and he answered that it was Aizen Sosuke.

Ch. 23The Most Important Thing

Shihōin Chunyan explained to Yoruichi that Kenma was using Kisuke and Saeaya as leverage to weaken her influence and test her response. Yoruichi refused to abandon her friends, and Chunyan advised her to surrender for now; meanwhile, Kenma took more time off and returned to another world.

  • Shihōin Chunyan warned Yoruichi that Kenma might use Kisuke and Saeaya to pressure her and expand his influence within the Shihōin Family.
  • Chunyan explained that the Spirit King’s treasures and the strength to protect them were the family’s most important power, still held by Yoruichi and Yushiro.
  • Chunyan said Kenma was likely testing Yoruichi and advised her either to abandon Kisuke and Hachishō Ryo or surrender.
  • Yoruichi refused to abandon Kisuke and Saeaya and accepted her father’s warning to think through her actions.
  • Kenma arranged more free time, took several days off, and headed to another world.

Ch. 24Uchiha Loyalty

Yoruichi tried to find Kenma to discuss Kisuke and Saeaya’s imprisonment, but learned he had left for the Human World. Meanwhile, Kenma prepared to travel with Shisui and a Uchiha guard force, then opened the Senkaimon.

  • Yoruichi went to the Second Division Headquarters looking for Kenma, but Shin'emon Maeda told her Kenma had taken several days off to visit the Human World with Shisui.
  • Yoruichi avoided Shin'emon’s offer to help with work and left to check on Kisuke and Saeaya.
  • Kenma told the Uchiha elders that he planned to travel to another world, and Fugaku and the others offered to accompany him as guards.
  • Kenma agreed to Fugaku selecting Uchiha elites to join the trip, then took Shisui and the others to the guarded Senkaimon courtyard.
  • Kenma drew his Zanpakuto and called, “Sever it, Kiritsugu!”

Ch. 25Arrival in the Pirate World

Kenma opened a passage from the Soul Society to the ocean world with his Zanpakuto and led Shisui, Fugaku, and a dozen Uchiha through it. They arrived at a sunny junkyard beside an endless sea, beginning their journey in the new world.

  • Kenma spoke with Kiritsugu in his Zanpakuto's inner world before slashing at the Sea point to open a passage through the Senkaimon.
  • Shisui and the Uchiha praised Kenma's spatial ability as Fugaku arrived with the assembled Uchiha elite.
  • Fugaku explained that he and Shisui would accompany Kenma, while the clan elders managed affairs in their absence.
  • Kenma led the group through the dark passage and out through a wooden door into the ocean world.
  • Kenma and the Uchiha found themselves on soft sand amid abandoned warships and scrap steel, with the sea stretching ahead.

Ch. 26Difference

Kenma brought the Uchiha Clan to Marineford, explaining that the Marines were preparing to execute Ace and that Whitebeard would soon attack to save him. The group passed through the unseen town below Marine Headquarters, where the Uchiha experienced firsthand that living people could not see Lost Souls.

  • The Uchiha Clan arrived at a beach near a massive building and followed Kenma toward it.
  • Shisui asked whether Kenma had brought them to Marineford to recruit more Lost Souls, and Kenma confirmed that their trip involved that purpose.
  • Kenma explained that Marineford was Marine Headquarters and that a war between one hundred thousand Marines and Whitebeard's fleet of thirty or forty thousand pirates would begin within days.
  • Kenma told the Uchiha that the Marines planned to publicly execute Ace, one of Whitebeard's adopted sons, forcing Whitebeard to attack Marineford.
  • Kenma led the Uchiha through the town beneath Marine Headquarters, where they discovered that patrolling Marine soldiers could neither see nor hear them.

Ch. 27Shichibukai

Kenma led the Uchiha through Marine Headquarters, where he introduced them to several Shichibukai and showed them the Giants gathered for the coming war. The group reached the rooftop overlooking the plaza, where one hundred thousand Marines stood ready for battle.

  • The Uchiha marveled at the towering Marines as Kenma led them through Marine Headquarters.
  • Kenma identified Bartholomew Kuma and Gecko Moria as Shichibukai, explaining that they were unusually large humans.
  • Kenma introduced Dracule Mihawk and Donquixote Doflamingo as two more Shichibukai, while Shisui and Fugaku considered whether the powerful figures might become allies if they died in the war.
  • The Uchiha encountered a group of true Giants and compared their immense size with Kuma and Moria.
  • Kenma and the Uchiha reached the rooftop and saw one hundred thousand Marines assembled in the plaza below.

Ch. 28Borrowing Your Sharingan

Kenma borrowed Shisui’s Sharingan through his Zanpakuto and used its enhanced vision to observe the Marines gathered for the coming war. As Kenma insisted that Whitebeard would come to save his companion, Fugaku bitterly compared the pirates’ loyalty with Konoha’s treatment of the Uchiha and other clans.

  • Kenma asked Shisui to lend him his Sharingan, stopping him when Shisui began reaching for his own eyes.
  • Shisui consented to Kenma’s request, and Kenma’s eyes became a Mangekyo Sharingan while Shisui lost his sight.
  • Fugaku and the other Uchihas reacted with shock to Kenma borrowing a physical organ and reassured themselves that he possessed supreme power.
  • Kenma used the Sharingan to observe the Marines, the Shichibukai, and Empress Hancock from afar, and he praised the Sharingan’s vision.
  • Kenma told Fugaku that Whitebeard would come to rescue his companion, and Fugaku wondered why Konoha had failed to protect its own people.

Ch. 29Ace Arrives

Kenma saw Ace arrive at Marineford and prepared the Uchiha to activate a Kido barrier over the battlefield, assigning Shisui to guard him. After returning Shisui’s Sharingan, Kenma adjusted to losing its enhanced vision as the group prepared for the execution.

  • Using Shisui’s Sharingan, Kenma spotted Ace’s warship approaching Marineford under Onigumo’s escort.
  • Kenma gave Fugaku five Kido-inscribed Iron Nails and ordered the Uchiha to place them around Crescent Bay and the plaza to create a barrier that would calm Lost Souls.
  • Fugaku organized the Uchiha into teams to supply Spiritual Pressure, guard the barrier sites, and control the area, while Shisui stayed beside Kenma.
  • Kenma returned the Sharingan to Shisui, restoring Shisui’s sight and losing his own enhanced vision.

Ch. 30Shisui's Bakudo

Kenma reassured the Uchiha and showed them how to contact him through Kiritsugu’s connecting threads. Shisui then used Kido to link the scattered squads as they prepared to activate the barrier.

  • Fugaku offered his Mangekyō Sharingan as a replacement for Shisui’s eyes, but Kenma refused to leave him blind before his mission.
  • Kenma realized the Uchiha were sincerely worried about him and told Fugaku to carry out his mission.
  • Kenma taught the Uchiha to tug on their connecting threads to request his help and temporarily receive his Spiritual Pressure, though they insisted they would not rely on him.
  • The Uchiha used Flash Step to reach their assigned positions, and Fugaku led his squad onto the Execution Platform.
  • Shisui cast Bakudo #58, Tracking Feet, and Bakudo #77, Tenteikūra, to locate and contact the scattered squads.
  • Shisui told everyone to activate the barrier.

Ch. 31The Three Admirals Appear

Shisui completed a massive barrier that would keep the dead from quickly leaving the world, and Kenma revealed that Kuchiki Kyoka had created its Kido. As the Three Admirals arrived and the Uchiha prepared for the coming war, a chained young man was led onto the Execution Platform.

  • Shisui used Bakudo to coordinate the Uchiha as they powered Iron Nails and raised a barrier around the plaza.
  • Shisui noticed the barrier's Kido was not taught at Shino Academy, and Kenma explained that Kuchiki Kyoka had designed it to keep Lost Souls in the world after death.
  • Kenma realized his own wedding date was approaching before the plaza fell silent at the arrival of Aokiji, Akainu, and Kizaru.
  • The Uchiha recognized the Three Admirals as the Navy's highest combat force and readied themselves against their Haki and Devil Fruit abilities.
  • A bare-chested young man in restraints was led onto the Execution Platform as chains clinked.

Ch. 32The War Begins

The Uchihas watched Sengoku reveal that Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger, while Kenma and Shisui detected Whitebeard’s forces approaching Marineford. Whitebeard’s ships surfaced in the bay, and Kenma declared that the war was about to begin.

  • Fugaku and the Uchihas recognized Ace as the prisoner being brought to the execution platform and identified Sengoku and Garp.
  • Sengoku announced that Ace’s father was Gol D. Roger, shocking the Uchihas and prompting Shisui to realize Kenma had known the secret.
  • Shisui spotted a large pirate fleet approaching, and Kenma borrowed Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan to see it.
  • Kenma and Shisui noticed shadows and bubbles beneath the bay, where Whitebeard’s flagship and three other ships surfaced.
  • Kenma told the Uchihas to watch Whitebeard’s final battle as the war began.

Ch. 33Uchiha Are Adults' Tools

Whitebeard entered Marineford and unleashed a tsunami with his Tremor-Tremor Fruit, but Aokiji froze it before it could hit the island. As the battle began, Fugaku considered having the Uchiha eliminate powerful figures for Kenma, and Shisui asked Kenma whether the clan should act as his tools.

  • Whitebeard arrived in the bay and shattered the air, triggering a seaquake that raised enormous tsunamis on both sides of Marineford.
  • Kenma confirmed Shisui’s recognition of Whitebeard’s power, while Fugaku warned the Uchiha to stay alert and protect their standing with Kenma.
  • Aokiji froze both tsunamis, then attacked Whitebeard and was shattered by a punch as the bay turned to ice.
  • The pirates and Marines charged across the ice, beginning a battle while the Uchiha discussed whether to eliminate powerful figures for Kenma.
  • Fugaku asked Shisui to learn Kenma’s wishes, and Shisui offered the Uchiha as tools who could take the blame for quelling public outrage.

Ch. 34A Warning to the Uchiha Clan

The Uchiha clan watched the Marineford battle and asked Kenma for permission to intervene, but he refused and warned them not to act recklessly again. Kenma then challenged Shisui over suggesting that the clan might be sacrificed to appease public anger.

  • Fugaku and the Uchiha clan watched Kizaru, Marco, Jozu, Akainu, and the Shichibukai fight during the battle on the ice.
  • A clansman asked Fugaku whether Shisui had received permission to intervene, and Fugaku said Kenma had refused and warned the clan against repeating its reckless behavior.
  • Kenma explained that he had sensed Fugaku and Shisui’s thoughts through their contracts and confronted Shisui about their request.
  • Shisui knelt and apologized on behalf of himself and the Uchiha clan as Kenma warned him to respect the limits of what he would permit.
  • Kenma told Fugaku there would be no next time, then demanded that Shisui explain his remark about being pushed out to quell public anger.

Ch. 35The War Ends, the Shinigami Appears

Kenma and Shisui watched the Summit War reach its climax as Luffy rescued Ace, only for Akainu to kill Ace and Whitebeard to fall. After Red-Haired ended the fighting by confronting Blackbeard, Kenma prepared to descend into the ruined plaza and deal with the Lost Souls.

  • Kenma spotted Luffy and the escaped Impel Down prisoners arriving at Marine Headquarters, and Luffy led the pirates into the plaza in an attempt to save Ace.
  • Luffy reached the Execution Platform, but the Fleet Admiral transformed into a Great Buddha and shattered it; amid the bombardment, Ace escaped with Luffy and an executioner.
  • Akainu pierced Ace's chest and killed him, while Whitebeard's attacks damaged Marine Headquarters and Kenma noticed a giant hiding behind the building.
  • Blackbeard and his crew killed Whitebeard, took the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, and resumed fighting the Fleet Admiral.
  • Red-Haired confronted Blackbeard and brought the Summit War to an end, after which Kenma told Shisui they would deal with the Lost Souls and led him down to the plaza.

Ch. 36The Dead Pirates and Marines

Kenma weakened the barrier so the dead pirates and Marines could awaken as souls, and Whitebeard and his crew realized they had died. Ace reunited with Whitebeard and apologized for his death, but their reunion was interrupted when several dark figures appeared in the sky.

  • Kenma ordered Shisui and the Uchiha clansmen to alter the barrier so the Lost Souls could awaken.
  • Whitebeard realized he had died, and the pirates and Marines across the battlefield awoke as souls and reacted to their deaths.
  • Whitebeard's sons gathered around him while the pirates and Marines faced one another, nearly reigniting their battle.
  • Ace approached Whitebeard, apologized for his actions, and received forgiveness and encouragement from Whitebeard and the other pirates.
  • Whitebeard and Ace looked up and saw five or six dark figures floating in the sky, and one of them addressed the souls.

Ch. 37Lord Enma

Uchiha Fugaku arrived as a Shinigami and offered the Lost Souls a chance to live another life in another world if they signed a contract. Whitebeard, Ace, and others followed Fugaku to meet his Master, Lord Kenma, whom Whitebeard mistook for Lord Enma.

  • Uchiha Fugaku used his Spiritual Pressure to force the Lost Souls to the ground, then offered them a new life in another world through a contract.
  • Whitebeard endured Fugaku’s pressure and asked to meet his Master before deciding whether to accept the offer.
  • Ace and a Marine General asked to accompany Whitebeard, and the other Lost Souls demanded to go as well.
  • Fugaku crushed the crowd with his Spiritual Pressure again, then asked Kenma for permission to bring them along.
  • Kenma allowed the Lost Souls to come, and Fugaku led Whitebeard, Ace, and the others toward him.
  • Whitebeard asked how to address Fugaku’s Master, and Fugaku said they should call him Lord Kenma; Whitebeard reacted with shock and said, “Lord Enma?!”

Ch. 38Should We Sign a Contract?

Whitebeard and the others learned that they had died and followed Fugaku to meet King Enma. King Enma offered Whitebeard the chance to live another life through a contract, leaving him to decide whether to accept.

  • Little Oars joined Whitebeard and Ace, learned they were all dead, and said he was glad to be with them.
  • Fugaku led the Lost Souls to Marine Headquarters, where Whitebeard and the Marine officers kept the pirates and Marines from fighting.
  • Fugaku warned the Lost Souls to behave before King Enma and had the Uchiha help maintain order.
  • Whitebeard and the others approached King Enma, who praised Whitebeard's final words and offered him a chance to live another life by signing a contract.

Ch. 39Whitebeard's Reaction

Kenma explained to Whitebeard that he was a Shinigami from Soul Society, not the King Enma Whitebeard had mistaken him for, and offered to bring him there under a contract. The offer covered only Whitebeard, Fire Fist Ace, and the giant, leaving everyone else to face their own fate; after the crowd protested, Fugaku and the Uchiha subdued them with Spiritual Pressure.

  • Whitebeard asked Kenma whether he was King Enma and what he wanted from the dead souls.
  • Kenma clarified that he was a Shinigami from Soul Society and offered Whitebeard a choice between contracting with him or being left to the uncertain fate of this world's Lost Souls.
  • Whitebeard asked about his sons, and Kenma said only Whitebeard, Fire Fist Ace, and the giant interested him; the rest would be left behind.
  • The pirates and Marines protested Kenma's disregard for them, so Fugaku and the Uchiha pressed the Lost Souls to the ground with Spiritual Pressure.
  • Kenma told Fugaku to withdraw the pressure, and the terrified Lost Souls fell silent and avoided his gaze.

Ch. 40Whitebeard's Conditions

Kenma used the fate of the pirates’ Lost Souls to pressure Whitebeard and Ace into serving him in exchange for bringing their companions to the Soul Society. Whitebeard accepted, and Kenma agreed to let the others live freely under conditions of his own.

  • Kenma confirmed that he intended to take Whitebeard, Ace, and Little Oars, while leaving the other dead pirates and Marines alone.
  • Whitebeard realized Kenma was using his sons as leverage, and the pirates protested until Ace ordered them to be quiet.
  • Ace offered to serve Kenma loyally if he brought all the Lost Souls to the Soul Society.
  • Whitebeard agreed to serve Kenma on the condition that his sons would be left free and unharmed.
  • Kenma agreed to free the pirates but said he would not provide for their needs and would recruit any who showed aptitude.
