The Otsutsuki Clan were aliens who traveled the universe in pairs.

When they found a suitable planet with life, they planted the Ten-Tails they had brought with them. It became a God Tree and absorbed the planet's energy. They then fed the lower-ranking Otsutsuki of the pair to the tree, producing a Chakra Fruit.

The richer the planet's energy and the stronger the Otsutsuki fed to the God Tree, the more potent the Chakra Fruit it bore.
