History

Chiba was born apparently without eyes and spent twelve years concealing the gradual formation of his incomplete Byakugan behind a blindfold. During that period, blue light intermittently flashed within his developing eyes, and he secretly used his incomplete vision to study the Hyuga’s Gentle Fist. Once his eyes fully formed, his Byakugan transformed into the Tenseigan. 1

Chiba initially regarded the eye as an inherited power distinct from Ōtsutsuki Toneri’s version: it belonged wholly to him and could evolve through successive awakenings rather than a single Fetal Movement process. Its growth also strengthened his chakra, stamina, recovery, physical attributes, and learning ability. 1 13 107

Early battles established the Tenseigan as the source of Chiba’s rebellion against the Hyuga Clan and Konoha. Its gravity-based powers let him repel Hyuga techniques, immobilize Hiashi, remove Neji’s Caged Bird seal through Tenseigan Chakra and Yin–Yang Release, and eventually escape Konoha after activating Tenseigan Chakra Mode. 3 6 11

Chiba later used its chakra absorption and Yin–Yang Release alongside stolen Tailed Beast chakra to create the foundation of a New Tailed Beast. His pursuit of further battles and Tailed Beast chakra was driven partly by the need to sustain Tenseigan Chakra Mode and partly by the eye’s combat-based awakening progress. 17 32 61

Toneri’s two moon-derived Tenseigan initially surpassed Chiba’s first-awakened eye. Chiba used a shadow clone to test Toneri and delay him while his true body completed the Second Awakening, reversing the long-term balance between the two users. 80 81 84

Appearance

In Chiba’s normal active state, the Tenseigan replaces his white Byakugan with sapphire or blue-white irises marked by a dazzling white floral pattern at the pupils. He can revert the eyes to their Byakugan appearance when concealing them. 1 3

The Tenseigan retains and enhances Chiba’s Byakugan-based sight while dramatically improving his base attributes and chakra potential.
