Meng Hongchen comes from the Sun Moon Empire and studies at the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy. Her grandfather, Jing Hongchen, is the academy’s headmaster and a Level 9 Soul Engineer who heads the Illustrious Virtue Hall. Her older brother, Xiao Hongchen, accompanies her to Shrek Academy on exchange 56 85 86.

Before meeting Aoyao, she became an owner of a diary copy and learned that its rewards could genuinely transform a soul master’s abilities. Worried that other diary owners would advance before her, she began seeking a way to appear in his entries. Her curiosity about his repeatedly praised appearance provided another reason to approach him 13.

She had previously visited the Extreme North Land to obtain her first few soul rings. Those visits left her familiar with the region and its supreme soul beasts, including the Snow Empress and Ice Empress 146 166.

Nevertheless, she becomes embarrassed when Aoyao reciprocates too boldly, particularly when he calls Xiao Hongchen his “brother-in-law” 84 85 157.

Her lovestruck behavior coexists with practical calculation. She persuades her grandfather to accelerate the exchange program, hides her involvement to avoid exposing her diary access, and offers to teach Ning Tian after recognizing that antagonizing Aoyao’s close companions would be unwise. She also withholds her academy’s most closely guarded soul tool techniques 85 117.

She is deeply loyal to the Sun Moon Empire and her academy, but does not approve of every imperial decision. She wants to defeat Shrek in the tournament, condemns the empire’s cooperation with the Holy Spirit Cult, and is furious at the diary’s account of Mingdu’s civilian deaths. Her attachment to Aoyao complicates that loyalty: she fears becoming his enemy and later keeps silent about his rare materials to prevent the empire from targeting him 61 63 64 84 92 160.

Meng Hongchen’s request causes the Shrek–Sun Moon exchange to begin before its originally scheduled post-tournament date. Assigned to the Outer Court’s fourth year, she struggles to find Aoyao because their classes occupy separate buildings and follow different schedules. She finally discovers him in the cafeteria and introduces herself 56 84 85.

Her offer to teach Ning Tian gives her a continuing reason to spend time with Aoyao. She later declines to pursue the Inner Court alongside her brother, claiming to be weaker than him even though diary rewards have already pushed her strength beyond his 85 117.

Learning the Sun Moon Empire’s Future

The diary exposes Xu Tianran’s dealings with the Holy Spirit Cult, Mingdu’s destruction, and Tang San’s eventual renaming of the empire. Meng Hongchen responds with concern for her country and anger toward Huo Yuhao and Tang San 61 64.

She correctly guesses that Huo Yuhao fathers Ju Zi’s son, Xu Yunhan, then reacts with revulsion upon learning that the child eventually inherits the imperial throne. She also considers warning her grandfather about Xuan Ziwen’s future departure for the Tang Sect, but doubts he would believe her 65 66 101.

Seeking a Godhood Inheritance

Aoyao considers giving her the Ice God inheritance because of her martial soul and their good relationship. The possibility excites Meng Hongchen, provokes Ning Tian’s envy, and prompts Ma Xiaotao’s private consideration of murder 145.

After inviting Aoyao to watch Xiao Hongchen fight Chu Qingtian, Meng Hongchen witnesses her brother’s defeat. She briefly questions her own relaxed routine before remembering that her diary-assisted cultivation is nearing Soul Emperor 157 161.

She accompanies Aoyao’s group during an assassination attempt, when the Heavenly Demon Puppet appears to protect them.
