Vander turned and went into the storeroom behind him.
A moment later, Lux finally got a cup of goat's milk—though it was only powdered milk mixed with water.
As Lux took the cup, the entire Last Drop Inn was swiftly cleared out. The patrons all seemed to have things left to do, but apparently, they were willing—and had reason—to show Vander some respect.
Benson hauled off Vi, who was still fuming. Before she left, she showed Lux her fist again, muttering all the while about "showing Vander some respect" and the like.
"You care a lot about your reputation. You don't want people to know you have a good relationship with the enforcers, right?" Holding the warm goat's milk in her hands, Lux easily got to the heart of the matter with Karya's help. "It seems you're quite an important person around here."
"You don't understand how things work here, and I don't want any accidents. So I'll say it again: leave now. It's better for everyone." Vander didn't answer the question directly. Instead, he poured himself a drink. "Besides, I've already shown my good faith."
"Did you get a share of that Hextech too? Things don't seem to be the way I thought." Lux took a deep breath, apparently savoring the taste of the goat's milk. "I thought this was a vicious attack, and that the enforcers had been bribed to label it an accident..."
Vander stared at Lux, dumbfounded.
His surprise seemed genuine, so Lux could only shrug awkwardly. She wasn't lying; that really was what she'd thought had happened.
It couldn't be helped. From her point of view, the whole thing looked awful.
A building had exploded in the middle of the street, but a witness had received a large sum of money from an unknown source.
