Among the many early-shift workers in New Freljord Port, the dock porters were the earliest risers and the most conspicuous.

When slowly turning gears pushed a lever and rang the clock tower bell in District Eight, its toll swept through the neighborhood like a spring breeze reviving all things, waking workers from their dreams one after another.

A short while later, the clerk on duty yawned and pressed a button. The streetlights came on in sequence with the bell, and beneath their gentle glow, the dock porters streamed together toward the docks, packed so tightly they looked like marching ants moving house.

At the district exit, the leaders of each porter crew were already waiting with signs in hand. Their eyes swept keenly over the surging crowd, picking out familiar faces and quickly welcoming them back into their crews. After taking attendance, they led their workers to that day's early-shift dock.
