Although the water-quality monitoring station was part of the Shuriman Empire's underground waterway system, that system ran alongside the ley network and carried clean water.

Sewers, on the other hand, carried wastewater.

They were two completely different things.

So why was the water-quality monitoring station connected to the sewer, and how had the clean-water pipes become part of the sewage system?

That was an awkward question.

The clean-water pipes had become sewers because, after the Shuriman Empire collapsed, the Shuriman city-states could no longer make use of the Empire's legacy.

The Shuriman Empire had spent hundreds of years building countless cities and their supporting infrastructure across the Shuriman Continent, allowing Shurimans to enjoy the best possible lives even in the desert.

But behind all that infrastructure stood the Shuriman Empire's highly advanced Magic Circuits, along with the Sun Disc, which provided a constant supply of magic.

As long as the Sun Disc was there, Shurimans only needed to figure out how to use magic. They didn't need to be especially thrifty; they only had to achieve the results they wanted.

But after Icathia erupted, most of the Sun Disc's power was used to build the Monolith Fortress. As the Shurimans' standard of living began to plummet, discontent inevitably took hold.
