With Malphite covering them, Zil'Aza and the Great Elementalists accompanying him finally fought their way out of the encirclement.
During the escape, two unlucky souls took a direct hit from an earth surge and were infected by the Void on the spot. Zil'Aza ended their suffering, while the others all showed varying degrees of magical exhaustion after fleeing. Their faces were pale, and they looked like walking skeletons.
There were fewer than a hundred Great Elementalists across all of Ixtal. Losing two was already a devastating price to pay—and every Great Elementalist who had managed to return safely knew full well that if Malphite hadn't stepped in, the team might not have made it back in one piece.
So, after the expedition returned to the Ixtal camp and gave a detailed account of what they had experienced, the Ixtali, having suffered firsthand, finally began to take the situation seriously.
The Great Elementalists' ordeal made them realize at last that closing the Void Rift wasn't a political issue, but a real war. Like the Primal Axioms, the Void Rift was an objective reality, independent of the Ixtali's will. Resorting to political maneuvering, feeling superior before the Rift was closed, or worrying about how to divide the spoils was sheer foolishness.
Of course, a few fools still thought that the team had failed because "Zil'Aza was too weak." But very few fools could become Great Elementalists and have a say, and their negligible opinions could no longer change Ixtal's overall course.
They couldn't rush in!
They had to proceed steadily from the perimeter, clearing the Void creatures bit by bit until the Void Rift was completely sealed!
