Volibear, on Bearman Island, was preparing a trap to catch the two fools who dared to blaspheme the dignity of the Deities.
Unfortunately, the trap was doomed to miss its intended targets. Lux and Ashe had changed course and planned to cross the Sea of Frost somewhere else.
Lux was quite confident in her own abilities, but Karya had always kept her in check. Her confidence had never swelled into arrogance, and she cautiously persuaded Ashe.
With the change of route, Lux and Ashe had a lot more preparations to make.
First, the voyage would take longer, so the two of them needed to bring more food and water. And since they had to take Yukal with them, they would need a bigger boat than originally planned.
If Lux and Ashe were crossing the sea to Bearman Island, they would only need to make the simplest kind of raft: inflate some sheepskins, lash them together with a wooden frame, then build a wooden deck on top to carry people and supplies.
But if they chose to land beneath the ice cliffs of the great glacier, a hide raft wouldn't meet their needs. Lux and Ashe needed a more reliable boat.
And since they were bringing Yukal, the boat would have to be deep enough to ensure it wouldn't capsize. They would also need to load enough fodder for Yukal. The more they calculated, the larger the boat had to be.
In the end, Ashe decided they needed a boat at least thirty feet long and over ten feet wide. To propel a boat that size, they would also need to make a simple sail.
