Annie was lying on the grass, bored out of her mind and yawning as she basked in the sun amid a patch of flowers, wondering where she should go to find some fun, when she suddenly spotted her apprentice. The young witch, who had recently been working harder than ever—the one hailed as the youngest genius apprentice witch in Roberta, and who had defeated a well-established full-fledged witch at just fourteen—came hurtling down the spiral staircase from the treehouse with a book in her arms, then ran straight toward Annie.

Seeing her approach with a book, Annie asked before she could say a word, sounding rather unwilling.
The girl had been asking all sorts of strange questions lately, like some curious little kid. How could Annie possibly have the patience to answer every single one?
Besides, even if the girl was technically her apprentice, Annie only gave her a pointer or two when she was in the mood. Most of the time—like right now—she'd rather leave the task of teaching her magic to that bear who couldn't use magic, the silly Tibbers.
How that magic-less creature was supposed to teach her properly was none of Annie's concern.
"Teacher, Teacher!"
"Look at this! What does 'Horcrux' mean in this book? Can it really make someone immortal and give them eternal life?"
Clutching her copy of Magick Moste Evile, Ilena dropped to her knees beside Annie and pointed to a line on the page: "Concerning the Horcrux, this most evil magical invention, we shall neither elaborate nor offer instruction." She hurriedly asked her teacher what it meant.
She would have liked to ask Little Bear, too,
