Annie had just finished dealing with a few bad guys. Before she had time to decide what to do next, the Den Den Mushi she was carrying began to vibrate. As if sensing something, she took it out of her pocket.
It was an animal used for communication, shaped like a snail and covered in spots and stripes, or sometimes a single solid color.
There was a speaker or keypad on top of its shell. When not connected, it slept; when a call came through, it woke with a start and made a "puru puru" sound like a telephone ringing. During a call, its mouth moved just like the caller's. It could understand human speech and even feel human emotions. It worked by converting people's voices into the Den Den Mushi's own sounds and transmitting them over long distances. It was a naturally occurring animal.
"This is bad!"
"Annie!"
A moment later, Chopper's voice came from the Den Den Mushi.
"What's bad?"

She'd just given a few bad guys a thorough beating, so she was in an absolutely delightful mood. She'd been planning to tell them about it!
"Where are you right now?"
Chopper ignored Annie's question and asked one of his own.

Annie glanced at a large tree nearby, where the characters "23GR" were written, and told him where she was.
But before Annie could tell him she'd just beaten up someone called a "Celestial Dragon" and that her bounty was about to shoot up, Chopper's wailing cut her off.
