Over the past few days, a certain troublesome little girl had visited the Great Temple of Light in Esthru. Then she'd been thoroughly blasted by an orbital bombardment near the lake to the south. Afterward, once she'd dealt with the troublemakers, she'd gone right back to wandering around as if nothing had happened.
The day before yesterday, she'd visited the city of Ilis and stayed there for the night.
The next day, she'd headed east, passing over the twin stone bridges guarded by a large group of elves. She'd admired the "sunset over the twin bridges" from the bridge, then made a special trip to take a look at the supposedly miraculous teleportation-interference magic device, the "Emerald Gate."
Annie had clearly thought little of the interference device. She certainly didn't think that piece of junk was as impressive as ordinary people made it out to be.
Since then, she'd been wandering northeast along the main road toward the Rockspine Mountains—in other words, in the direction of home.

As Annie walked along, she suddenly spotted a large group of villagers coming toward her along the road. They were fleeing in haste, bringing their families, pushing carts, herding cattle and sheep, and carrying their belongings on their backs.
