The Greater Will had existed before the world—the Lands Between—came into being.
In some distant age of chaos, it discovered this place and came to the Lands Between. It created the goddess Marika and sent out two messengers, the Two Fingers and the Three Fingers. Their purpose was to guide the bewildered people and maintain the Golden Order it had left behind.
However...
One of its two messengers, the Three Fingers, unexpectedly fell and began pursuing the Frenzied Flame that would bring about the end of the world. So the Two Fingers suppressed and sealed it away.
Over countless years, the people of the Lands Between began, under the Two Fingers' guidance, to collect Runes, whether intentionally or not. These were things akin to products of the laws of nature, or primordial runes from the world's creation.
In the end, the barbarian warrior Hoarah Loux became the first to gather enough Runes. He helped Marika create the Elden Ring.
(As far as anyone knew, the Elden Ring was something like the world's laws in mythology, or the "Great Way." Whoever controlled it would naturally become the "lord" of the Lands Between?)
Next, Hoarah Loux was given the name Godfrey and married Marika, becoming the first Elden Lord!
After that, the world entered the age of the Golden Order under the Elden Ring. The Golden Tree began to grow, completely blocking the light of the stars and even the sun.
And after Godfrey became the first Elden Lord, the goddess Marika, created by the Greater Will, naturally became the goddess widely praised by all living things: Queen Marika the Eternal.
