On the evening of the third day...
Annie and Guts were already sitting in a carriage, on their way to their next destination.
The carriage, of course, wasn't one they'd paid to hire. It belonged to a kind old priest and his daughter, whom they'd met on the road. Perhaps the two of them had looked rather pitiful, traveling through the night, so the priest had invited them aboard.
At first, Guts hadn't wanted to inconvenience anyone and had declined.

"Would you like me to bandage them?"
"We have some medicinal herbs in the carriage. They should help."
As the carriage rattled along with the three of them inside, the priest's daughter, Clette, repeatedly stole glances at the burly Guts and his terrifying greatsword. At last, she couldn't help speaking up timidly to ask if he was all right.
"I'm fine!"

Before the gloomy old man Guts could speak—looking as if everyone owed him millions of gold coins—Annie waved a hand dismissively and spoke up. Then she shoved a handful of pine nuts into Clette's hand.
"Holy Light?"
"Does that mean a blessing from God?"
Clette only
