Today was strange. When Annie got up, she discovered that Aunt Kelly, who was usually so diligent, disciplined, and punctual about showing up for work, was hiding in the crew lounge, drinking alone.
Sure, Annie knew she usually got up a little late, but still, it was at least two or three in the afternoon—the time when all the grown-ups were supposed to be working. And at a time like this, even if nothing was wrong, even if the Orville was cruising along normally, even if Aunt Kelly was only supposed to rest and remain on standby as first officer, drinking was definitely not allowed!
What's more, Annie knew that last night, Kelly had gone to Uncle Ed's room and joined everyone at that cocktail party. She'd already had a lot to drink then. There was no way she could be drinking again after just one night.
So, after sneaking a few glances, Annie was fairly sure: Aunt Kelly had something on her mind—or, rather, she was in a bad mood. That was why she was hiding here, drinking alone and occasionally making a series of gritted-teeth or downright terrifying, twisted faces.

As she watched, Annie suddenly thought that Kelly seemed pretty fun. Maybe she should go in and find out what was going on?
After all, she'd just woken up and had nothing to do. Finding someone to chat with, watching someone look frustrated and aggrieved, or maybe just gloating a little, all seemed like pretty good options.

"Hey!"

"Aunt Kelly, can I come in?"

Though she asked as if she were seeking permission, Annie didn't wait for an answer at all. The moment Kelly looked up at her, Annie cheered and rushed over, then hopped onto the sofa beside her.
