Luckily, Annie had chosen not to go to that Moclan planet to watch Bortus, the Orville's second officer, perform that so-called "Ja'loja" ceremony. It had undoubtedly been a very wise decision.
Because, according to what Miss Alara and the others who'd gone along—like that idiot Uncle Ed—secretly told her after they returned to the ship, it was an incredibly boring ceremony. It was just a group of people watching Bortus perform in public, peeing against a cliff in a showy fashion, with the wind at his back, for a few dozen centimeters or so?
Anyway!
They hadn't thought there was anything important or worth watching about it, let alone anything entertaining. Yet at the time, everyone had to put on a solemn and excited expression, and they weren't allowed to laugh halfway through?
And then...
The scary part was that at some point, they all had to shout proper slogans together, as if they were attending some ridiculous funeral?
All in all!
That idiot Uncle Ed had described it in such detail, and swore so firmly that he'd never go a second time next year, that Annie's small measure of curiosity was finally extinguished completely. She never paid any attention to—or asked about—that boring event she'd never wanted to attend in the first place.
Not long after the Orville left the Moclan planet where the locals only peed once a year—that is, the planet Moclus—it received a broadcast warning that a star in a nearby system was going supernova and becoming a red giant, and that they should stay well clear. Curious, since they'd never seen a star die and swallow its planets, everyone discussed it and then flew the Orville straight toward the location marked in the warning.
At any rate, compared with watching the Moclans pee—a super-boring affair
