After receiving a plea for help from a fellow Claymore who had risked her life to return with a warning, Clare went alone to the mountains known as Mount Zakuru.
At first, just like Annie and the others, she ran into organized resistance from the Yoma. But after easily cutting down the Yoma grunts blocking her way, she eventually found the Yoma nest where the four Claymores had been defeated.
When she first entered, Clare thought the place was merely occupied by a powerful Awakened Being and a few Yoma grunts. But only after breaking in did she realize that the situation inside the cave was far more complicated than she could have imagined.
There, besides a terrifyingly powerful male Awakened Being named Dauf, was one of the three Abyssal Ones on the continent: Riful of the West.
The Abyss was, in fact, inseparable from the Organization.
That was because the strongest warriors in each generation of the Organization's Claymores—the strongest warriors, who became the most powerful Awakened Beings after awakening—were known as the Abyssal Ones.
Over the course of history, three extremely disastrous incidents had occurred in which a number one Claymore awakened. One was a male warrior from the era when men served as warriors, and two were female warriors from the era when women served. They hid in the northern, western, and southern regions of the continent: Isley of the North, also known as the Silver King; Riful of the West; and Luciela of the South.
Of course, at first, Clare had no idea that her opponent was an Abyssal One or that Riful of the West existed.
She had simply run into the powerful male Awakened Being Dauf and had nearly been killed by him. If Galatea, then ranked number three in the Organization, hadn't happened
