The next morning, the Gryffindor students had just finished breakfast when they all discovered, to their utter astonishment:
Gryffindor, which had earned points for winning match after match and making it to the Quidditch finals, and had maintained its lead in the House Cup standings ever since, had somehow lost a whopping two hundred points?
And now it had gone straight from first place to third, while its old rival, Slytherin House, had taken the lead once again?
Naturally, the Gryffindor students erupted in an uproar!
They all began asking around to find out what had happened and why two hundred points had suddenly been taken off. Some were so distracted and downcast that they could barely focus in class—Ron and Harry, for instance.
Of course, the reason they were so troubled wasn't just that Gryffindor had lost two hundred points. Hermione suspected that the points had been taken off because of them!
The problem was, they had solemnly insisted that they hadn't done anything wrong lately, and hadn't been caught or lost any points.
Even so, Hermione was still suspicious and didn't entirely believe them. The three of them naturally ended up having another huge argument over it, and nearly fell out completely.
