As far as the eye could see, countless ravines crisscrossed the mountains, their streams rushing without end like the most rousing melody of nature, each telling tales of ages past. The thousand cliffs and precipices, meanwhile, displayed their unique forms in a dazzling contest, showing off the rugged splendor of the world.

Deep in the mountains, birdsong rang out, clear and melodious, though the birds themselves were nowhere to be seen. Their unseen calls lent the place an air of mystery and serenity. Along a narrow path by a mountain stream—one apparently made by some person or other creature—wildflowers had quietly withered. Yet even as they fell and turned to mud, their fragrance lingered on the branches, making Annie feel a little better as she walked among them.
