As the iron door between the train cars slowly opened, Annie saw all sorts of eerie changes.
First, the lights in the car flickered several times, nearly going out completely. Then, while the other passengers kept their heads down, pretending to be dead, asleep, or clueless, a blizzard of white joss paper with square holes began drifting past the windows—before the procession with its drums, gongs, and suonas had even entered.
There was so much of it that some of the paper even stuck to the windows of the subway car as it hurtled through the darkness.
As the pieces stuck to the glass or slowly slid down, Annie got a clear look at them. They didn't seem to be ordinary joss paper; every piece was tinged with some strange energy and carried an unholy aura.
She had no idea what they were actually for or how they might affect ordinary people, and she didn't care to find out.
All she knew was that the moment the door opened and the joss paper began to drift through the air, a stale, rotten atmosphere filled the car she was in. The dimensions of space seemed to shift in some curious way, and the rules of the once-clear physical reality of Realspace grew blurry.
At the same time, the lights in the car flickered like the feeble flames of ghost fires. Black vines that ordinary people couldn't see began crawling all over the outside of the car walls. Like writhing snakes or tentacles, they quickly spread until they covered the entire exterior of the train.
Before long, the familiar clack-clack of the train in motion gradually faded away, as if the whole train had suddenly and inexplicably gone somewhere
