As night fell, the thousands of lights in the magical city of Oisast formed a unique nightscape. The view through the carriage windows had been truly beautiful.

But Elena and Annie were too busy to admire it now. They sat in their places in the living room, one angry, the other dejected.

Just then, Fern came out of the kitchen with dinner, wiping her hands as she looked curiously at the two of them. They were a far cry from the bold, ambitious pair who had gone out earlier. She'd already guessed most of what had happened, but still asked on purpose:

Fern would have been better off not asking. The moment she did, Elena let out a long, deeply aggrieved sigh.

Then she slumped into the sofa as if her legs had given out, burying her face in the cushions. Even her usually lustrous silver hair seemed to have lost some of its shine.

With no other choice, Fern looked to Annie for an explanation.

Annie was even worse!

Her cheeks were puffed out, her little face round with anger, and she sat in the softest armchair without saying a word. She hugged her teddy bear, Tibbers, and pinched him viciously over and over.
