Night had fallen deep, and all was silent. On the west side of one of the floating islands behind Grandmother Jia's courtyard in the Rongguo Immortal Estate stood Lin Daiyu's residence.
By day, the garden on this little floating island was filled with drifting immortal mist, and spirit butterflies and birds danced through the air, making it lively and bustling. Now it had fallen into a slumbering stillness. Only the starry sky and the bright full moon continued to cast their light without reserve, shining softly through the flowers and treetops and past the window lattice, inlaid with gauzy mermaid-silk curtains thin as cicada wings, into and around the exquisite yet somewhat chilly little courtyard.
Inside Lin Daiyu's room, the floor was laid with spiritwood that gave off a faint fragrance. The furnishings were elegant, with bookshelves and a zither table. In the corner, an incense burner shaped like a crane smoldered with Tranquility Incense, meant to ease sleep and soothe the spirit, its smoke curling upward.
Yet the atmosphere in the room was rather at odds with the peaceful night.

A troublesome little girl of an immortal was sprawled without a trace of decorum across Lin Daiyu's exquisite rosewood canopy bed, carved with flowers. She had not even changed out of her elaborate banquet dress or removed the diadem on her head, simply flopping straight down onto the embroidered bedding.
She turned her face to one side and murmured, her head resting on one arm. With her other little hand, she contentedly stroked her own round, slightly bulging belly now and then. A lazy, satisfied smile played across her face, and every so often she let out a contented sigh.
The starlight and moonlight outside fell just right across half
