Though it was only a tiny distance, it was enough to make the Flesh Hound's pounce miss. It could only let out a futile whine as it brushed past her, and even as its terrifying claw swung through the air to change direction, it still remained about an inch from her breastplate.
A miss by a hair could mean a miss by a mile—there was truth in that saying. Its claws could only rake wildly and uselessly through the air, unable to touch anything at all.

Just then, at the instant the first Hound pounced and was about to pass her by, the female officer viciously drove out her dagger.

She thrust it viciously into the Flesh Hound at the base of its ear, or rather, the spot on the side of its head where its ear should have been. Though the dagger was short, it instantly pierced its skull and plunged into its brain, before emerging through its eye socket, its tip poking out.

As she twisted the blade and pulled it free using the momentum, reddish-brown, viscous fluid reeking of decay spurted from the Flesh Hound's eye socket and behind its ear. Its enormous body stiffened in midair.
Then, like a marionette with its strings cut, it crashed stiffly to the ground nearby. Its limbs twitched twice before gradually falling still.
