Although the Wasteland Camp had not been renamed the Wasteland Base for very long, calling it a base now seemed somewhat inappropriate.
Because at night, when one looked out from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Command Center's command hall, the eye no longer saw the original gray-brown wasteland, barren and strewn with rubble. In its place stood a city of steel upon the vast desolate land, composed of metal, energy fields, and countless lights.
Yes, a city!
Though it was still relatively small, still very rough around the edges, and as tiny as a child's toy compared to the interstellar hive cities of the Koprulu Sector that covered entire continents or even half a planet, it truly was a city now!
There were streets, buildings, plazas, markets... The streets had been paved directly with high-strength, discarded corrosion-resistant alloy steel plates. Beneath those plates ran energy pipelines, communication lines, and drainage facilities laid by SCV engineers—though the latter were probably not very useful. Various kinds of buildings lined both sides of the streets.
Originally, there had only been Supply Depots here, since they were the only structures the base had opened to players as residences. But after a large number of Ork players had been trained as SCV engineers, the souls of Earth's civil engineering students awakened. They built many houses of varying sizes from steel plates, and they looked quite convincing. Some had even put up skyscrapers.
Still, Supply Depots remained the most numerous!
They were the players' homes: basic structures that supplied energy, food, water, and lodging. They could also serve as any kind of facility, such as workshops, warehouses, or taverns. More importantly, they could sink underground for shelter when necessary. Their utility and defensive capabilities were far beyond anything the players could build themselves.
But they were
