"Oh! God... These damn bastards!"
"How come they just finished repairing this road a few days ago, and now they're tearing it up again? Is this how those damn bureaucrats waste our hard-earned tax money?!"
"Pah! What the hell!"
"Take a look for yourself, passenger. I'm not deliberately taking the long way around!"
"This was a perfectly good main road! They'd only laid the asphalt and new paving stones a few days ago, and now those bastards have torn it all up... There's no way through now. We'll have to take a big detour to Harlem. Don't you dare report me—you won't get anywhere even if you do!!"
A taxi had just reached a main road in Manhattan's West Side and was about to continue south when the driver spotted a large construction sign up ahead: "Roadwork Ahead. Detour for Vehicles and Pedestrians!" Farther along, a large group of workers in reflective vests seemed to be busy digging up the perfectly good road, drainage ditches, water pipes, and sidewalk, leaving the whole place in ruins. It wasn't just impossible to drive through; even pedestrians would have trouble getting across!
With no other choice, the grumbling taxi driver turned around after explaining the situation to his two passengers, who had also seen the construction sign. He steered away from the piles of dirt and heaps of paving stones and slabs blocking the road, preparing to take the two unlucky passengers on a long detour to their destination in the West Side.
However...
What the citizens of beleaguered Manhattan didn't know was that some blocks in the city's West Side had already been sealed off by a group of agents in black suits and sunglasses, due to an incident involving aliens. They'd also used sophisticated technology to conceal the area.
