Diakha was in the cockpit of his Buster Gundam, working with the maintenance crew and the other technicians to inspect the new mobile suit. Suddenly, he turned to the Aegis Gundam's cockpit on his right and asked Aslan, who was busy inside.

Their ZAFT army had originally been a political organization called the Zodiac Alliance, founded by Siegel Clyne and Patrick Zala in C.E. 50. Three years later, in C.E. 65, it changed its name to the "ZAFT" it was known by today. Then, three years after that, it was reorganized into a conventional military organization equipped with mobile suits! ZAFT's forces were now under the direct command of the P.L.A.N.T. Supreme Council, and answered to the National Defense Committee, whose members included Patrick Zala.

Although they were effectively P.L.A.N.T.'s defense force, ZAFT had never established a formal rank system. In name, they weren't a regular army, but rather a militia. You could even say they were Patrick Zala's private army, since he was the chairman of the National Defense Committee.

That made his teammate Aslan, who was also the only son of National Defense Committee Chairman Patrick Zala, a pretty good person to ask.
