She had only just left the Academy City where she had stayed for several months and grown bored of everything. After traveling through a flash of bright light and arriving in this randomly chosen world, little Annie couldn't help letting out another surprised exclamation.
But she soon realized that her cry hadn't made a sound that traveled anywhere—not even her own voice. The only sound she could hear had come from deep in her throat, carried through her body by her vocal cords, and reached her ears from within. That was all.
The reason was that right now she was floating unsupported in the pitch-black expanse of outer space. There was nothing around her—above, below, to either side, in front, or behind. No sky, no ground, and certainly no sea... She was in the limitless vacuum of space, weightless, standing upright as she slowly rotated of her own accord.
Of course, perhaps it wasn't she who was rotating. Maybe the distant galaxies, the planets, and the faintly glowing "constellations" she could see were turning instead? Or perhaps the entire universe was rotating, while she, newly arrived and unaffected by it, was seeing the strange sight of the whole world revolving around her as though she were its center?
