Background
Garen began as the captain of Cobra Squad, Marine Corps ID NO.01, aboard the Hope. He initially rejected Annie’s offer to become a melee fighter, arguing that an interstellar marine had no reason to abandon an electromagnetic rifle for a two-handed sword. 198
After Annie’s training demonstrations in the simulated Azeroth setting, he adopted the greatsword and began wielding the Demacian Power of Justice. Dawn’s simulation and Annie’s mana-to-energy conversion design enabled him, an ordinary warrior, to sense Holy Light through concentration; his weapon required charging through High-Energy Crystals from Planet JNO.3. 227
He rose from squad captain to a five-star general and joint-fleet commander for the Hero Federation’s capital military region. By the Earth defense campaign, he held authorization code 0013 and could activate large-scale dimensional troop deployments under Operation Kindling Plan. 559 632
Personality
Garen is confident, loud, and prone to theatrical declarations in battle. He uses slogans such as “Demacia” and “Justice shall prevail” to steel his resolve, while Darius openly teases him for showing off. 227 258
Despite his bravado, he adapts when situations demand it. He protects allies from attacks he could otherwise evade, leads breakouts against overwhelming forces, and chooses prisoner capture over needless escalation. 556 558 716
His perspective as a senior officer from an advanced interstellar civilization initially makes him dismissive of Westerosi politics and warfare. Stranded without his armor or weapons, however, he becomes dependent on Sansa and Arya Stark for survival and gradually commits himself to helping Winterfell resist the White Walkers. 632 633 653
Abilities & Skills
Power of Justice
Garen channels golden Demacian energy through his body and weapons, strengthening his attacks and defenses.
- The power is associated with Holy Light and was developed through Annie’s training framework. 227 241
- It can be used without a weapon, including while fighting barehanded. 635
- Heavy use depletes his reserves; his ultimate strike against an Ultralisk leaves him exhausted for roughly half a day. 258
- His effectiveness is reduced without CMC armor and conventional equipment against elite physical opponents. 652
Courage
Courage manifests a temporary golden shield around Garen.
- Provides temporary magical resistance and physical defense. 239
- Can protect his entire body or form a shield wall approximately three meters wide. 556
- He uses it to withstand a Protoss Zealot’s psionic blade, warship fire, and a White Walker dragon’s breath. 239 556 651
- The shield cannot be maintained indefinitely. 239
Judgment
Judgment is Garen’s signature spinning attack, performed with a greatsword or, when unarmed, his fists.
- He spins at high speed while channeling Power of Justice, functioning as a golden whirlwind through enemy formations. 239 635
- Used to defeat Protoss warriors, clear Corpse Puppets, and kill six attacking direwolves in seconds. 240 558 635
- Prolonged spinning causes severe dizziness and loss of balance due to the strain on his cerebellum, so he keeps the move brief. 558
Ultimate: Giant Golden Greatsword
Garen can call down a massive golden sword from the sky after gathering Power of Justice.
- He first uses the technique against an Ultralisk after reaching the peak of the High Tier. 258
- The attack annihilates a Death Knight and large numbers of surrounding White Walkers, but consumes nearly half his internal strength and attracts further enemies. 640
- At Winterfell, it kills a White Walker dragon and destroys a broad area of White Walkers. 651 652
Leadership and Dimensional Deployment
As a five-star admiral, Garen commands Hero Federation forces and possesses authority to open dimensional gates.
- He leads Garen’s Demacia squad alongside Darius’s Noxus squad in close-combat operations. 238 240
- During the Earth defense campaign, he opens a portal large enough to deploy tanks, aircraft, Marines, Reapers, Marauders, and Thors. 559
- He proposes using a powerful Hero Federation warship to support the Citadel races against the Reapers. 569
Equipment
- Demacian Greatsword / “Demacia Power” — charged with High-Energy Crystals and used to channel Power of Justice. 227 558
- CMC Power Armor — provides crucial combat protection and environmental survival capability; Garen considers himself significantly weaker without it. 558 632 652
- Electromagnetic rifle — his standard ranged weapon, though he abandons it against enemies resistant to light firearms or when committing to melee. 253 258
- Warhammer — used during the defense of Winterfell. 648 651
- Space Gem / Space Stone — a secretly retained, depleted gem that accidentally transported him to Westeros; later used in dimensional-gate operations. 632 635 559
Relationships
- Annie — His superior and the source of his Demacian combat training. He follows her orders in the capture of Kerrigan and recognizes her as the Hero Federation’s president. 227 259 569
- Darius — Captain of Viper Squad and Garen’s recurring rival, sparring partner, and battlefield ally. Darius mocks Garen’s flashy techniques but fights beside him repeatedly. 198 240 258
- Shepard — Ally during the Reaper conflict; Garen shields her from warship fire and advises her on securing Hero Federation assistance. 556 569
- Admiral Anderson — Allied commander during Operation Kindling; follows Garen during the breakout through Corpse Puppets. 558 560
- Sansa Stark — Rescues him after his accidental arrival in Westeros and accepts his offer of service in exchange for food, lodging, and pay. 632
- Arya Stark — Helps rescue him from the frozen forest and remains wary of him; later fights and flees alongside him during the White Walker crisis. 632 640
- Bran Stark — Tests Garen with direwolves, reveals knowledge of his arrival through the Space Stone, and asks him to protect Sansa and Arya. 635
- Kerrigan — Garen defeats an Ultralisk to confront her forces, then prevents Zeratul from killing her so she can be captured on Annie’s orders. 258 259
Story Role / Major Arcs
Demacia and Noxus Training
Garen accepts melee training after witnessing the dangers of Azeroth’s monsters and the power gap between ordinary Marines and Heroic Tier combatants. He takes up the greatsword, develops Power of Justice techniques, and leads his squad into the Stratholme simulation. 226 227 228 231
Haven Star Campaign
Garen leads the Demacia squad against Protoss Zealots on Haven Star. He defeats Harradi in a duel, relies on Courage and Judgment against agile Templar, and supports combined Warrior-and-Knight tactics in the later team battle. 239 240 241
Queen of Blades Conflict
After reaching the peak of the High Tier, Garen uses his ultimate greatsword strike to kill an Ultralisk. He later teleports to the decisive battlefield, saves Kerrigan from Zeratul, and assists in taking her alive under Annie’s command. 258 259
Earth Defense and Operation Kindling
During the Reaper invasion of Earth, Garen shields Shepard and Anderson from enemy fire, leads them through Corpse Puppets with Judgment, and opens a dimensional gate to deploy Hero Federation forces. 556 558 559
Westeros Displacement
Garen secretly retains a Space Gem and accidentally activates it, arriving in a frozen forest without armor, weapons, or supplies. Sansa and Arya rescue him; he becomes Sansa’s paid guard while seeking a way home. 632
He proves himself against Bran’s direwolf test and joins Winterfell’s defense against the White Walkers. His golden attacks rally the defenders and destroy a White Walker dragon, but he is ultimately overwhelmed by the Night King until Annie intervenes. 635 648 651 652
After returning with CMC armor and reinforcements, Garen offers Westeros’s survivors a route out amid the continuing threat from Cersei’s forces. 653
Trivia
- Garen originally considered melee combat obsolete and explicitly rejected Annie’s first offer of an enchanted two-handed sword. 198
- Darius considers Garen’s combat style excessively flashy and calls his defensive combinations “shameless.” 240 258
- While stranded in Westeros, Garen initially mistakes Tyrion Lannister for a member of another humanoid species rather than a human. 642
- He is distinct from the younger Garen of the Kingdom of Demacia, whom he meets alongside Lacus in a later incident. 1303
