Background
Before arriving in the new world, Ainz was an ordinary, isolated salaryman named Suzuki Satoru. His game avatar was named Momonga, and he had no surviving parents or close friends outside YGGDRASIL. 392
He crossed over with the Great Tomb of Nazarick and its NPCs, becoming the only Player within the tomb while its former guild members remained absent. To conceal his identity during early exploration, he briefly used “Lord Dark Knight” and later adopted “Momonga” as an adventurer cover identity. 392 393 406
Ainz first becomes wary of Roa after witnessing his exceptional magic and hearing claims about the supposed Hall of Souls. Believing Roa may be a Player or the representative of an ancient hidden faction, Ainz chooses transactions and surveillance over immediate hostility. 395 406 408
Appearance
Ainz’s true body is an imposing skeletal undead with a bare skull, two red lights burning in his eye sockets, and no flesh or internal organs. He commonly conceals this form beneath heavy black armor and a cloak. 392 439
- Tall skeletal frame, nearly half a head taller than Roa. 439
- Black armor with a heavy, intimidating silhouette. 420 439
- Wields the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown and wears numerous item-type rings. 439
- Later receives a separate human-like body created by Roa: a blond, blue-eyed, European-looking male form of approximately level 95. 447
Personality
Ainz is cautious, calculating, and deeply conscious of the risks posed by incomplete information. Roa’s unexplained strength and the fabricated Hall of Souls cause Ainz to repeatedly reject his Guardians’ more aggressive proposals, prioritizing Nazarick’s security over pride. 395 396 406 408
Despite his undead nature and increasingly cold disposition, Ainz sees himself as responsible for Nazarick’s inhabitants. He accepts blame for Shalltear’s mental domination and pays an enormous cost to restore her, framing his decisions as obligations to his subordinates. 424 426
He is also protective of Nazarick’s resources. Even after losing to Roa, he resists surrendering World-Class Items until the threat to his tomb leaves him little room to negotiate. 445 446
Abilities & Skills
Tiered Magic and Super-Tier Magic
Ainz is a high-level magic caster with access to tenth-tier and Super-Tier Magic, capabilities normally limited to Players. 421 423
- Casts Skyfall Strike, a Super-Tier spell that creates vast magic arrays and devastates an area nearly ten kilometers across. 425
- Uses extensive buff chains before serious combat, layering defensive, sensory, resistance, and offensive enhancements. 424
- Possesses magic above the level normally available to human casters in the New World. 406
- Trades numerous spells to Roa, including high-tier magic, resurrection spells, and the Super-Tier spell Wish Upon a Star. 396 422 423
Time Stop
Ainz can cast tenth-tier Time Stop, freezing everyone within its effect except himself. 439 440
- Can prepare delayed magic to trigger immediately when time resumes, including True Death. 440
- Cannot harm targets directly while Time Stop is active; attacks made during the frozen interval are ineffective. 440
- The technique fails to restrain Roa, who can move through the effect using his own time-based abilities. 440
Instant-Death Magic
Ainz specializes in death magic and uses instant-death effects as decisive finishing tools. 423 440
- Uses Despair Aura to lower an opponent’s resistance to instant death. 439 440
- Activates Death is the End of All Things, an ultimate move intended to bypass instant-death resistance and kill its target outright. 442
- Uses a cash-purchase item to accelerate the casting of his ultimate technique. 442
- Fails to kill Roa, who evades the attack through Instant and Time Zero. 442
Nazarick Command and Resources
As Nazarick’s ruler, Ainz commands level 100 Guardians, vast magical resources, cash-purchase items, resurrection magic, and World-Class Items. 393 396 425
- Leads Guardians including Albedo, Shalltear, Demiurge, Cocytus, Aura, and Mare. 396 424
- Orders surveillance and intelligence gathering rather than committing Nazarick to uncertain conflicts. 407 408
- Resurrects Shalltear after her mental domination, accepting both a level penalty and a cost of 300 million Gold Coins. 426
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown — Ainz’s signature staff, carried during his confrontation with Roa. 439
- Item-type rings — Numerous rings worn on Ainz’s fingers. 439
- World-Class Items — Nazarick possesses eleven World-Class Items, including two from “The Twenty.” 422 445
- Cash-purchase items — Used to accelerate casting and gain advantages in battle. 425 442
- Human-like clone body — A separate body sculpted and animated by Roa, allowing Ainz’s consciousness to experience a human form without abandoning his undead profession. 446 447
Relationships
- Roa Greyrat / Roa Grelart — Initially a suspicious negotiator and potential enemy. Ainz trades magic for Roa’s information, battles him alongside four Guardians, loses, and later accepts a settlement involving World-Class Items and a human-like body. 395 421 442 445 447
- Demiurge — Floor Guardian and strategic adviser. Demiurge urges action against Roa and suspects him of being a hidden Player with the Hall of Souls as his force. 392 396 433
- Nabe — A battle maid who accompanies Ainz under his “Momonga” adventurer identity; she is fiercely loyal and repeatedly advocates stronger action against Roa. 406 408 420
- Shalltear Bloodfallen — Guardian whose mental domination prompts Ainz’s conflict with the Slane Theocracy. Ainz fights and later resurrects her at great cost. 422 425 426
- Albedo, Cocytus, Aura, and Mare — Nazarick Guardians who serve Ainz and join him in monitoring or attacking Roa. 396 424 440
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival and Roa’s First Transaction
After arriving with Nazarick, Ainz encounters Roa near Karn Village. Roa’s overwhelming magical display and claims about the Hall of Souls lead Ainz to trade a hundred spells for information rather than risk a direct confrontation. 392 395 396
Investigation of Roa
Ainz uses the adventurer identity “Momonga” while trying to assess Roa’s origins. He orders covert surveillance, but Roa detects and kills Nazarick’s assassin bugs, reinforcing Ainz’s belief that Roa may be a Player or the agent of an unknown power. 406 407 408
Information Deals and Shalltear’s Incident
Ainz turns to Roa for answers regarding Shalltear’s mental domination. Roa identifies the use of a World-Class Item and provides information on historical Players, the Slane Theocracy, and the Dragon Emperor in exchange for Super-Tier Magic, high-tier spells, and valuable items. 421 422 423
Battle Against Roa
Ainz confronts Roa with Albedo, Shalltear, Demiurge, and Cocytus. His Time Stop and instant-death tactics fail when Roa moves freely within frozen time and accelerates his own temporal flow. Ainz’s ultimate move, Death is the End of All Things, also fails, leading to his defeat. 439 440 442
Settlement and Human Body Deal
Following the battle, Ainz negotiates to preserve Nazarick, agreeing to transfer World-Class Items and additional magic. Roa later creates a human-like body for Ainz and teaches him two minor spells, giving Ainz a way to experience human sensations without sacrificing his undead combat abilities. 445 446 447
