The spears embedded in the black dog were probably the work of those creatures.
And obviously, since the black dog could only move along the ground, it had very few ways to fight back.

He swung the massive Dragon-Slaying Sword, knocking the falling spears away or chopping them in two.
Then he planted the Dragon-Slaying Sword in the ground with his right hand and started attacking with the Repeating Crossbow.
In the real world, those shadow bats probably had some kind of resistance.
But this was a dream. As long as you had the will, anything was possible.
And so the bolts from the Repeating Crossbow hit the shadow bats with remarkable accuracy. Their "enormous" power meant a single bolt could kill one outright. In fact, they were powerful enough to punch huge holes through the shadow bats, like bolts fired from a siege crossbow.
After all, everyone knew Guts had the kind of willpower that could slay gods and demons.
Under these circumstances, his bolts might as well have been siege-crossbow bolts.
Before long, Guts and the others had driven the shadow bats away.
Sierki hurried over, pulled the spears out of the black dog, and treated its wounds.
That was when they noticed a brand beside the black dog's collar, in the same place as Guts's: on the back right side of its neck.
