"Kid, you fall back, I'll hold them off." Lin Yun saw the young warrior's hand was about to be severed and quickly shouted. He then braced his shield against the ground and stepped forward, facing the axe-wielding Goblin again, swinging his Lantern Staff.
"D20+2+2=7, MISS."
The axe-wielding Goblin swayed unsteadily, seemingly unaccustomed to the battle axe in its hand, giving it a drunken stagger. It then took a small step back, subtly dodging Lin Yun's Lantern Staff. The lamp oil from the Lantern Staff splashed onto the ground, dealing no damage. Worse still, after so many rounds of attacks, the lamp oil on the Lantern Staff seemed to be nearly depleted, and the light began to dim.
If they didn't replenish the lamp oil or attack again soon, Lin Yun and the others would face a complete loss of light. This was not good.
"Silent Sir, I can do it." Despite the searing pain in his right hand, the young warrior gritted his teeth and persisted, thrusting his short sword forward again. However, his lack of strength, coupled with the blood on the short sword, rendered his attack completely ineffective.
Finally, the Female Fighter from behind arrived. The MVP of the entire scene, she finally reached Lin Yun's side and launched an attack at the Goblin that Lin Yun had missed earlier. She threw a punch, but the Goblin's unsteady stance was so erratic that her first punch missed.
Seeing that she had missed the Goblin, the Female Fighter took a deep breath, calmed her overheating brain, and seized the moment. She struck the swaying Goblin again with a palm strike. This time, she hit the Goblin's leather armor, eliciting a cry from the creature.
Encouraged by the Goblin's pained scream, the Female Fighter's face lit up with joy. She followed up with a flying kick. However, the Goblin, having stumbled back from the Female Fighter's palm strike, found it even harder to maintain its balance with the axe in hand. It retreated with unusual steps, coincidentally timing its movements so that by the time the Female Fighter's foot landed, its momentum had nearly dissipated. Although the kick connected with the Goblin's large leather armor, it dealt no damage.
The axe-wielding Goblin's face contorted into a grotesque grin at the Female Fighter's attack, especially her extended leg. Drooling, it instinctively reached out to grab her thigh, forgetting that Lin Yun was right beside it.
Facing the drooling Goblin, Lin Yun directly slammed his shield into it.
"D20+2+2=14, HIT."
With its attention completely fixated on the Female Fighter's thigh, the Goblin was unable to notice Lin Yun's righteous shield. Lin Yun exerted force with his left hand, slamming the axe-wielding Goblin against the nearby wall with his shield.
"D4+2=5"
However, the Goblin that Lin Yun had slammed with his shield seemed unusually resilient. Even after being hit by the Female Fighter earlier and then by Lin Yun's shield, it managed to endure. It truly was a more elite Goblin, with greater durability.
It staggered to its feet with a roar, but seeing its teeth nearly shattered by Lin Yun's shield and blood seeping from its mouth, it seemed more fierce than formidable.
Meanwhile, the Goblin with the longsword, seeing its axe-wielding companion beaten half to death, seemed to falter. But it looked at the warrior before it, who was already weak, pale, and bleeding profusely from his hand – an easy target. Preying on the weak was a traditional virtue of their Goblin kind, and their shaman was about to emerge. So, it swung its sword at the young warrior again.
Likely due to excessive blood loss, the young warrior's body swayed. He couldn't even properly see the Goblin's attack, only feeling a flash of white light and a sudden coolness on his chest.
The Goblin had cleaved a large gash across his chest. The only part of the young warrior's body with any defense was the iron plate in front of him. While it was an iron plate, it had its limits. This blow made the young warrior feel as though he could die at any moment. He didn't want to die.
Just then, the Goddess Priestess, who had been slightly delayed out of concern for the Female Fighter, finally arrived in time, positioning herself behind the nearly collapsing young warrior. She began to chant, "Merciful Mother Earth..."
As her prayer continued, her hands began to emit a soft glow, healing the young warrior's body. While it didn't completely heal the wound on his hand, it at least stabilized it for the time being.
"Thank you." Although slightly weak from blood loss, the young warrior felt much better than before and thanked the Goddess Priestess.
Meanwhile, unable to recklessly use his Lantern Staff, Lin Yun could only rely on his shield. After all, they were all humans. Without a light source, they would be blind, and facing these Goblins, they would likely all be in trouble.
Facing the axe-wielding Goblin, which he estimated to have only a sliver of health left, Lin Yun charged with his shield.
"D20+2+2=24, CRITICAL HIT."
"D20+2+2=14, CONFIRMED CRITICAL HIT."
Lin Yun's charge, combined with his own weight, slammed the axe-wielding Goblin against the wall. The impact felt heavier than before. Pinned against the wall by the shield, the Goblin's eyes felt as if they were being squeezed out, a terrifying sight.
"2D4+2=5"
Seeing that Lin Yun seemed to have finally dealt with one of the Goblins, the young warrior felt a surge of courage, especially since his injuries were temporarily stabilized. He should be fine for now, probably, maybe, not die. Filled with valor, he finally realized that his short sword had lost its function as a sword; it was useless. He discarded it and drew his preferred longsword, then swung it.
Indeed, the longsword was his forte. With a swift, sharp strike aimed at the Goblin's neck, he severed more than half of its neck. The Goblin instinctively clutched its throat and fell.
After successfully severing half of the Goblin's neck, the young warrior felt as if he had used up all his energy and spirit in that instant. He knelt on the ground, gasping for breath. It had been incredibly difficult to hold on until now.
But just as everyone thought the battle was temporarily over, an unpleasant, hoarse chanting suddenly arose. Because the Lantern Staff's illumination had dimmed, its range had decreased from 15 feet to less than 10 feet, which in real-world terms was about 3 meters.
While Lin Yun and the others were focused on the last Goblin, the one who had been lurking in the shadows raised its wooden staff and began to chant. It seemed it had been stealthily hiding here all along and had finally found its opportunity.
As the creature finished its chant, lightning began to crackle from the Goblin shaman's wooden staff. It was this that allowed everyone to see its presence. Then, lightning erupted from its staff, radiating outwards in waves centered on it, engulfing Lin Yun, the Female Fighter, the Goddess Priestess, and the young warrior.
"D20+4=13, SUCCESSFUL SAVE."
This burst of electricity was accompanied by a shockwave. It was a constitution save, immediately making Lin Yun think of Thunderwave. The oncoming impact made Lin Yun sway, but his stable footing prevented him from being knocked back. However...
Looking at the others who had been pushed back about 3 meters by this wave of lightning, oh, wait. The young warrior wasn't completely pushed out, but he seemed to have lost consciousness due to exhaustion.
Alright, Lin Yun glanced at his health points. He had started with 8 and now had only 2 left. As a seasoned Dungeon Master, he recalled that Thunderwave normally dealt 2D6 damage. Failing the save would push a target more than 10 feet away, while succeeding would prevent the push but still inflict half damage. This reduction of 6 health points suggested that the Goblin shaman's Thunderwave had dealt maximum damage, 12 points.
Because of the flash of lightning, Lin Yun could see the Goblin shaman slowly emerging from the shadows, holding a wooden staff, adorned with fur trinkets, and with two pieces of cloth covering its eyes.
Damn, this kind of finishing move is too terrifying. Where's the healer? I'm about to die, hurry and save me! Wait a minute.
Lin Yun finally remembered. He was actually a healer.
