The undead charged at the castle without fear of death.
One magical trap after another was triggered, but against these nearly endless undead, the traps' power was truly pitiful. The dracolich and the four other necromancers at his side were all extraordinarily powerful, and their equipment was superb as well. With ease, they drove their undead army close to one side of the castle walls.
Several demon mages atop the walls jumped and cursed furiously. Huge groups of kobold demons were herded up onto the battlements, all of them brandishing tiny wand-blades. Waving their strange magical implements—shaped like wands but fitted with blades—they danced about and chanted spells, hurling fireballs down from the walls like raindrops.
Against an undead force charging in massed ranks, even high-powered forbidden spells were less lethal than this most basic blanket fireball bombardment. Low power, low consumption, prolonged sustained attacks—against an undead army that relied on sheer numbers, this was the most effective method of attack.
Clearly, Wang Zong had made the most appropriate response to the undead army's assault.
Skeletons and zombies piled up layer upon layer beneath the walls, forming neat stairways that reached straight to the top. The kobold demons chattered noisily as great quantities of fireballs poured down like rain, constantly blasting skeletons and zombies away. Every explosion of a fireball left several skeletons and zombies shattered and incomplete.
Flames also spread across the ground, burning the piled-up skeletons and zombies into ash without pause.
