The Gallic Empire's five northern provinces were in full-blown crisis.
Arthur had conscripted every able-bodied young and middle-aged man from the five provinces. Aside from a few young nobles, the common people's homes were left with great numbers of elderly, weak, sick, and disabled. Faced with the savage allied armies of the other races, these old, weak, women, and children had not the slightest power to resist.
New Dunkirk had managed to evacuate nearly all its citizens, but the other five ports struck by the first wave of attacks had been completely razed by the other races' armies. Church and Gallic Empire scouts discovered that in all five port cities, every elder had been slaughtered by the orcs, while the young women had been loaded onto ships and abducted to the Odin Icefield. Food and livestock had been devoured clean by the enormous appetites of the other races' armies.
After nearly three million troops of the other races landed successfully, they immediately split into roughly ten groups and drove straight south.
The resistance forces barely organized by local officials in the five provinces crumbled at the first touch. Virtually every city fell to the other races' armies within a quarter of an hour. Every scrap of food along their path was swept away, the elderly were slaughtered, and young women and children were carried off.
For a time, those provinces became a bloody, reeking tempest, a living hell upon earth.
The armies of the other races—especially the orcs—knew only destruction; they understood nothing of building. Wherever they passed, cities became ruins and villages were burned into bare wasteland. Columns of
