Job Assignment

The scene changed so suddenly that Liu Zhi couldn't react in time. When he finally came to his senses, he realized he was still standing atop the pyramid, but everything around him had fallen into ruin. The bright moon had only just risen halfway into the sky, illuminating everything on the summit.

In front of Liu Zhi lay a backpack that had been chopped in two. Not far away, a skeleton that had already become Dry Bones stood motionless.

His longsword had been tossed some distance away. Whether it had been worn down by the passage of time or not, it had turned gray.

Three things lay before him: the Crystal Skull, the Golden Pyramid Statue, and a long staff.

Their placement seemed a little odd. They didn't look as if they had just appeared there; instead, they seemed to have been lying there for ages, almost blending into the dust on the summit. If he hadn't paid attention, he might not have noticed them at all.

After a moment's hesitation, Liu Zhi stepped forward to pick up the three items.

The instant he touched the Crystal Skull, he felt a jolt in his head, as if something had been forcibly injected into it.

Then the status panel before Liu Zhi's eyes rapidly shifted and changed. After a long while, the new panel finally settled into place.

The new status panel had two pages, both framed with black skulls and roses.

The first page still showed Liu Zhi's basic attributes and information.

The second page was an equipment page he'd never expected to see. It showed Sandru's current appearance, and the Crystal Skull, long staff, and Pyramid Statue had been forcibly locked into the slots above his head, in one of his hands, and in an accessory slot.

The attributes of the three items were displayed as well.

Looking at these panels, Liu Zhi couldn't help feeling that something was off. The Necromancer here seemed different from the Necromancer he'd imagined.

He understood Summoning, but what was going on with Master of the Underworld? And what was the Nether Palace?

Why wasn't there any explanation? Sandru's original memories hadn't left him any clues, either.

Puzzled, Liu Zhi couldn't help pressing his hand against the Golden Pyramid Statue.

The items had all merged into Liu Zhi's body. The Crystal Skull had disappeared into his head, while he held the Death Long Staff in his hand. He could hold it in his left hand, his right, or both; it didn't stop him from doing anything else.

Only the Pyramid Statue had become a pendant at his waist, hanging from his belt. Liu Zhi could lower his hand and touch it with ease.

The shockwave burst outward from the top of the pyramid. Liu Zhi saw its white light sweep across all the nearby buildings. The buildings that had been hidden in the jungle collapsed in the shockwave, turning into ruins scattered across the ground.

Then the full moon in the sky turned blood red. Vast numbers of twisted, strange plants began to grow, filling every open space.

Looking at what was happening, Liu Zhi had no idea what to do.

Just then, he suddenly felt the ground beneath his feet trembling faintly.

Worried, Liu Zhi lowered his head and saw a hairline crack appear in the stone at the top of the pyramid.

Liu Zhi's heart lurched. He had no time to think. He snatched up the longsword lying nearby and ran down the pyramid.

But he was still too slow. As soon as he rushed off the pyramid, the fifty-meter-tall structure collapsed completely. Huge fragments flew in every direction, nearly burying Liu Zhi beneath them.

When everything had finally settled, Liu Zhi shouted, "What on earth is going on? Can someone explain this to me?"
