Power Progression

Nature and Succession

“Heavenly Dao” names both the laws underlying cultivation and the supreme position assumed by successive individuals. Its holders receive immortal information and authority over the Myriad Worlds; the position can change hands even though a Heavenly Dao is described as immortal and indestructible 317 742 2957.

• Qualification — Dominating the Myriad Worlds is a reliable route to the position, but past holders did not all achieve it that way. Powerful cultivators suspect that satisfying other conditions can also permit ascension 2957.
• Nine Nether counterpart — After a normal ascension, a corresponding Nine Nether Ruler is born. The two share memories from before the ascension, though the Nine Nether influences the ruler's personality. The First Heavenly Dao was an exception; the Second's creation of a Nine Nether Ruler established the pattern for later generations 2962 3018.
• Retirement — Former Heavenly Daos remain bound by restrictions on their existence and ordinarily cannot manifest in the Mundane World. Their immortal bodies can protect their consciousness even from the incumbent Heavenly Dao 3155.
• Transcendence — Heavenly Dao immortality still binds a holder to the Myriad Worlds. Successive holders investigated ways to escape that bond; Song Shuhang and Senior White's simultaneous ascension was pursued as a possible route beyond it 2987 3090 3137.

Abilities and Limits

Heavenly Dao authority

• A holder can wield the world's laws, grant blessings, and reshape reality. Daozi's true-body descent transformed a barren Dream Realm interlayer into a living domain rather than an illusion 2970 2987.
• Daozi used a law of “changing fate against heaven” to restore several Confucian Tribulation Immortals and repair damaged resurrection formations. He could not, however, find or restore everyone he sought 2964.
• Authority's effects depend on its user's methods: Song Shuhang used Heavenly Dao-level pillars to knock back an opponent whom the pillars could not injure 3140.

Immortality and information

• A Heavenly Dao in its perfect state cannot be directly harmed, sealed, banished, or cursed. Non-damaging interference can still affect it, as Song Shuhang's forced knockback demonstrated against the Fourth Heavenly Dao 3140.
• Heavenly Dao information can overwhelm observers. Witnessing the transfer of Daozi's information and computational power injured even Eternal Life cultivators 3119.
• Immortality is not unlimited control: Daozi could suppress the dark Sun's immortal substance but could not permanently destroy it, and his own transitional state risked collapse 2990.

Heavenly Dao Small Black Room

• These prison spaces developed from experiments begun by the Third Heavenly Dao and subsequently modified by later holders 1396.
• Confinement can obscure a person's existence from the world's records and memories. Even those who had encountered Song Shuhang could forget him while the Small Black Room's effects persisted 1395.

Major Succession Events

• The Liquid Metal Ball's plan — Seeking to repair the existence it lost to the Confucian Sage, the Eighth Heavenly Dao studied earlier holders' creations and devised a Heavenly Court Plan involving a protagonist who would establish the Heavenly Court and integrate an Eternal Life Dao 1396.
• Daozi's temporary ascension — Cheng Lin's group rebuilt the conditions needed to activate remnants of the Eighth Heavenly Dao's plan. Daozi first severed and preserved part of his existence, then ascended as the 8.5th Heavenly Dao to help save his Confucian companions 2903 2953 2957.
• The joint Ninth Heavenly Dao — Daozi stepped down after a short tenure and transferred Heavenly Dao-level computational power to Song Shuhang. Song Shuhang and Senior White then attained the Dao together—the first two individuals to hold the position simultaneously 3119 3137.
• The attempted substitution — Before seeking transcendence, the pair investigated replacing themselves with the complete, unconscious body of the Fourth Heavenly Dao 3155.
