Background / History

Konoha and Root

Orochimaru is Sarutobi Hiruzen’s disciple and a former comrade of Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Hiruko. He also belonged to Root before commanding Konoha’s front against Sunagakure 90 100 102.

His earlier cooperation with Danzō included accompanying him and Yūno Ryōma to the orphanage to force Yakushi Nonō back into espionage. The three were the only people who knew her spy identity at that time. By the time Nonō flees, Orochimaru has already broken ties with Root 96.

As frontline commander, Orochimaru fights with limited manpower. Danzō’s recall of Ryōma further deprives his sector of intelligence support, despite Konoha committing less than a third of its ninja to that battlefield 36.

The Land of Rivers confrontation

Heavy casualties from Sunagakure’s poison lead Orochimaru to request war orphans with basic first-aid training to assist his medical personnel. Yakushi Kabuto attracts his attention through his medical talent and concern for the orphanage, although Orochimaru also recognizes signs of Root training in the boy’s movements 96.

After Pakura attacks the hospital seeking Sasori, Orochimaru uses poisoned Kabuto and Nonō as bait in a trap intended for her. Instead, Tsunade, Shizune, Nonō, and Kabuto become enclosed in the Four Purple Flames Formation, while Seika’s group remains outside 97 100 101 102.

Orochimaru fights Seika with the Kusanagi Sword, snake techniques, and Manda. His attempt to implant a Cursed Seal fails because Seika has deceived him with Genjutsu. A subsequent wind-and-fire attack forces him to expend considerable chakra on his substitution technique 101 103 104.

Despite his predicament, Orochimaru protects Tsunade and Shizune using a slug summoned through Tsunade’s chakra. He then fights Seika, Kakuzu, Pakura, and Konan to cover their escape and retrieve Hiruko. Seika wounds him and reveals White Zetsu tissue through Hiruko’s induced mutation 106 108.

The tissue changes the confrontation into a negotiation. Enticed by its research potential and the prospect of immortality, Orochimaru leaves Hiruko behind; Hiruko subsequently surrenders to Akatsuki 109.

Secret cooperation with Akatsuki

After the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, Orochimaru accepts an invitation to meet Akatsuki’s leadership in the Land of Grass. He teaches Hiruko cell cloning and chakra-assisted embryonic growth in exchange for further White Zetsu tissue 188 189.

Seika’s knowledge of the planned Kikyo Mountain campaign unsettles him enough to ask whether Seika possesses precognition. Orochimaru admits that he has little chance of becoming Hokage: he has absorbed Root and Anbu personnel into his own forces without securing recruits or benefits for the Sarutobi clan 190.

Following their private agreement, he abandons his prolonged strategy of feigning weakness and begins aggressive offensives. Sarutobi squads suffer devastating losses, while his successful breakthroughs target Sunagakure positions held by opponents of Acting Kazekage Pakura 191.

His research partnership later deepens. Orochimaru secretly diverts supplies requisitioned from Konoha to the Land of Rain and resumes laboratory work with Hiruko. Akatsuki can provide the resources and facilities he would otherwise need from Konoha 227 228.

Rinpoli and the end of the Sunagakure war

Orochimaru creates a young clone of Nohara Rin, whom Seika names Rinpoli. He takes her back to the front while preparing to fulfill his final obligation as commander: ending the war with Sunagakure before leaving Konoha 228.

Rinpoli becomes the “protective talisman” Seika promised. Obito’s recognition of Rin’s face interrupts his attempt to target Orochimaru, and his desire to protect the girl later leads him to kill Konoha operatives sent to sabotage Orochimaru’s campaign 228 230 232.

During Sunagakure’s decapitation strike, Orochimaru openly acknowledges betraying Konoha. Kirigakure turns against its supposed Sunagakure allies, and Seika joins the confrontation. Orochimaru triggers a massive landslide on Kikyo Mountain, killing many Sunagakure ninja 233 235.

After the victory, Orochimaru and Seika subdue Shukaku and seal it inside Rinpoli. Orochimaru accepts Sunagakure’s peace invitation on the fourth day after the battle and begins sending frontline personnel home, frustrating Konoha’s leaders’ efforts to keep him away from the village. Danzō subsequently replaces him as peace negotiator 237 239.

Appearance

  • Vertical, reptile-like pupils — repeatedly described as snake- or lizard-like; their movements can betray his calculations even when his expression remains controlled 101 188.
  • Sinister smile — his habitual expression, maintained through danger and tense negotiations; its disappearance during Hiruko’s crisis is conspicuous 108 189.
  • Konoha ninja vest — puts it back on when returning from the Land of Rain to complete his frontline duties 228.
  • Serpentine transformations — can elongate his neck or transform his body into a snake during combat 103 108.

Personality

Orochimaru’s curiosity can override morality, responsibility, and concern for human life. When Pakura mentions Sasori, the mystery interests him more than the wounded Konoha ninja around him. His pursuit of eternal life and victory likewise outweighs public approval or the Hokage position 97 191.

As a commander, he is cold-blooded, efficient, and intolerant of disobedience. His original principle is absolute fairness: dangerous assignments do not exempt anyone because of their surname. This earns loyalty among followers but alienates leaders who expect him to protect clan interests. Later, his dealings with Seika accompany a shift toward deliberately targeting Sarutobi squads 190 191.

His attachment to old comrades has not disappeared entirely. He risks himself to protect Tsunade and save Hiruko, finding their danger harder to laugh off than his own. Yet his eventual abandonment of Hiruko shows how vulnerable those bonds are to his research ambitions 108 109.

Orochimaru also retains a sense of obligation toward his followers. Although he could leave Konoha immediately once Akatsuki secures his research resources, he returns to end the war as promised 228.

Abilities & Skills

Kenjutsu and Taijutsu

  • Wields the Kusanagi Sword in close combat, matching Seika’s sword exchanges while initially limiting himself to basic Kenjutsu and Taijutsu 101 102.
  • Combines frontal sword attacks, snakes from his sleeve, and an elongated-neck attack from behind to strike from three directions 103.
  • Can launch the Kusanagi Sword from his mouth to intercept an incoming blade 108.

Snake Techniques and Summoning

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands — releases venomous snakes from his sleeve for attacks and restraint 103.
  • Manda — summons his giant, intelligent snake partner; Manda is bound by Seika’s Adamantine Sealing Chains and later destroyed by Konan’s explosive-tag attack 103 104.
  • Manda’s Snake Swarm — floods the battlefield with snakes to force opponents away 108.
  • Poisonous ambushes — sends snakes from underground and disguises snakes within his shuriken assault 102 103.
  • Utility snakes — uses a bite to break Hiruko’s Genjutsu and another snake to throw him out of immediate danger 108.
  • Limit — Pakura’s Scorch Release rapidly dehydrates and kills his snakes 108.

Transformation and Survival

  • Changes into a snake to evade lightning attacks and move through water 108.
  • Uses the Orochimaru-style Substitution Technique to survive Seika’s combined wind-and-fire attack, leaving a hollow, charred body behind 104.
  • The substitution consumes considerable chakra; surviving the attack leaves him visibly weakened 104.

Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique

  • Learned the technique from Hiruzen and produces hundreds of shuriken in a single barrage 102.
  • Extends the attack by having fallen projectiles turn into venomous snakes rather than simply dissipating 103.

Poison and Barrier Tactics

  • Uses snake venom on Nonō and Kabuto as part of his bait operation 100 101.
  • Hides additional poison on Kabuto’s skin; Tsunade neutralizes it without difficulty 102.
  • Sets the Four Purple Flames Formation trap with Hiruko, unintentionally enclosing Tsunade’s group rather than Pakura 100.

Cursed Seals and Genjutsu Vulnerability

  • Develops Cursed Seals and uses Anko as an early recipient, seeking more subjects to test the technique 103.
  • Attempts to implant a seal by biting Seika’s neck, but the apparent result is an illusion 103.
  • Recognizes an unusual vulnerability to Genjutsu and suspects his split soul may be responsible 104.

Biotechnology and Forbidden Research

  • Teaches biological cloning from ordinary cells and chakra-assisted embryo growth 189.
  • Applies repeated growth acceleration in culture tanks and supports gene-adjustment research 228.
  • Studies White Zetsu tissue as a potential route toward immortality 109 190.
  • Quickly identifies that Seika has exploited Hiruko’s Chimera Technique to make him absorb unfamiliar biological material 108.
  • Recognizes Seika’s Sage Mode from observing Jiraiya’s training; the provided events do not show Orochimaru using Sage Mode himself 235.

Sealing and Military Strategy

  • Works with Seika to subdue Shukaku and seal it inside Rinpoli 237.
  • Plans a year-long campaign to lure Sunagakure deep into the Land of Fire before annihilating its main force at Kikyo Mountain 191.
  • Ultimately uses a massive landslide at Kikyo Mountain to devastate Sunagakure’s troops 235.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — his principal blade, wielded by hand or projected from his mouth 101 108.
  • Shuriken — used with shadow cloning and concealed snake attacks 102 103.
  • White Zetsu tissue — supplied by Seika as research material and the central incentive behind their cooperation 109 189 190.
  • Culture tanks and laboratory materials — used for cloning and accelerated growth; later funded partly through supplies diverted from Konoha 227 228.

Relationships

  • Shiba Seika — opponent turned secret research partner. Seika wins leverage through White Zetsu tissue, intelligence, and Orochimaru’s precarious position in Konoha; their arrangement remains an alliance rather than confirmed Akatsuki membership 109 190 228.
  • Hiruko — former comrade and key subordinate whom Orochimaru tries to rescue, then abandons. They later resume research together despite Hiruko’s resentment 100 108 109 189 227.
  • Tsunade — former teammate. Orochimaru protects her escape despite low chakra and overwhelming opposition 106 108.
  • Jiraiya — former teammate and fellow Sannin. Their wartime priorities diverge, and Jiraiya’s later effort to organize cooperation against Akatsuki fails 188 192.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — teacher and political obstacle. Orochimaru’s refusal to favor the Sarutobi clan undermines his Hokage prospects, while his war-ending achievements alarm Konoha’s leadership 102 190 237.
  • Danzō — former Root associate. Orochimaru breaks ties with Root early; Danzō later takes over his role in the Sunagakure peace negotiations 96 239.
  • Anko — disciple and early Cursed Seal subject. Orochimaru asks whether she will join him after the war 103 231.
  • Rinpoli — Rin-derived clone created through his research. Her resemblance to Rin protects Orochimaru through Obito’s attachment; she later becomes Shukaku’s jinchūriki 228 232 237.
  • Obito Uchiha — initially targets him over suspected Wood Release experimentation, then inadvertently protects his operations to keep Rinpoli safe 226 228 232.
  • Manda — longtime summoning partner whose suffering Orochimaru treats as an acceptable contribution to battle 103.

Notable Quotes

“Born in a small country like the Land of Rain, yet able to reach this level at such a young age, nearly matching us—Shiba Seika, you have piqued my interest.” 103

“Your guess is correct. I can never become Hokage. You don’t need to test me—I’ve known this clearly since very early on.” 190

“Haven’t you been suspecting that I betrayed the village? I can answer you now: I did indeed betray the village.” 233

Trivia

  • Seika successfully impersonates one of Orochimaru’s subordinates using vertical pupils, a cold manner, and a random snake. Orochimaru later appears to recognize part of the deception behind the supposed ninja’s fame and reported death 204 211 216.
  • The Fate Observer System initially assigns Seika a 4.8% probability of being traded to Orochimaru by Root and dissolved as expendable material. This is a predicted outcome, not an event that occurs 1.
