Guiyuan's figure darted through layer upon layer of empty space, heading deep into the Northern Continent.
As he traveled, he mulled over the information he had gained from discussing the Dao with Kunpeng.
"Dragon, Phoenix, Qilin... The Three Clans have only just been established. The new order is still taking shape." Guiyuan murmured to himself.
"This really is a brief period of peace, just after the Ferocious Beast Calamity and before the Dragon-Han Catastrophe."
That peace was nothing more than a brief lull before the storm.
For ordinary innate divine beings, a calamity was a quagmire. Once they stepped into it, karma would cling to them, and escaping afterward would be difficult.
At best, their cultivation would suffer. At worst, they would die and their Dao would vanish.
But at the thought, Guiyuan chuckled. "Difficult to escape a calamity? That's true for them."
His mind sank into that mysterious and profound insight. The phantom of a mighty, surging river flashed through the depths of his consciousness.
"I have the Great Destiny Technique at my command. I can't simply do whatever I please, but slipping free of a calamity at a critical moment won't be difficult."
The real question had never been whether he could escape. It was... how much he could gain after entering the calamity!
"The Dragon-Han Catastrophe... The Three Clans will fight to the death. How much flesh and essence will there be? How many souls and how much soul-origin?"
Deep in Guiyuan's eyes flickered a cold greed, forged in the Eternal Life World through countless acts of slaughter and plunder.
In that world, rising higher meant competing, seizing, and "eating"!
Devouring anything that could help strengthen oneself.
For ordinary Primordial World beings, this killing calamity was something to avoid at all costs.
But to him, an Immortal King who had clawed his way out of mountains of corpses and seas of blood, it was practically a Taotie feast!
"There's risk, but the rewards... are worth a gamble." He made up his mind, scarcely able to restrain his eager impulse.
As his thoughts churned, the spatial ripples around him settled.
Guiyuan took a step and left the Northern Abyss Sea Region, setting foot at last on the coast of the Northern Continent in the Primordial World.
The land before him was desolate.
A handful of beings struggled to survive there. The strongest among them was no more than a Mysterious Immortal. Their minds were muddled, and they eked out a wretched existence amid thin spiritual energy and lingering sha.
Guiyuan swept the area with his divine sense, then shook his head.
"Their blood essence is too weak, their soul power too meager. They're not even enough to fill a gap in my teeth."
He knew the real prize lay deeper in the continent, in the heartland where the decisive battle had once taken place.
That was where the Ferocious Beasts' corpses were piled like mountains, where the Chaos Sha was so thick it could scarcely be dispersed!
He didn't linger. His figure became a streak of light and plunged straight into the continent.
The farther in he went, the more horrifying the land became.
The earth was an ominous dark red, as if soaked through with blood.
Black sha rose like columns of smoke from the fissures in the ground.
Enormous skeletons, some as large as mountains, could be seen everywhere. Some still held the savage poses they'd struck at the moment of death. Though countless yuanhui had passed, they continued to radiate a bloodcurdling, ferocious aura.
The dense sha was almost tangible. It ceaselessly tried to erode Guiyuan's protective divine light and bore into his sea of consciousness.
"Good! What a fine place!" Far from alarmed, Guiyuan's eyes blazed with delight.
With a thought, the aura around him shifted.
"I've been worrying about not having any handy spiritual treasures. These Ferocious Beast corpses and this boundless sha are perfect for refining a set of Thirty-Three Heavens Fierce Sha Treasures!"
Ordinary refiners treated sha as poison, avoiding it for fear it would taint a spiritual treasure's essence or disturb the refiner's mind.
But who was Guiyuan?
He formed hand seals and spoke in a low voice:
"Great Treasure Refining Technique! Great Investiture Technique! Great Catastrophe Technique! Great Devouring Technique!"
Four Great Dao laws revolved at once!
The Great Treasure Refining Technique served as the core, coordinating the entire process.
The Great Investiture Technique drew on the shattered law fragments within the sha, shaping them and fixing their souls.
The Great Catastrophe Technique absorbed the meaning of disaster, ruin, and decay, enhancing their fierce, baleful power.
Finally, the Great Devouring Technique ravenously consumed the surrounding sha and the essence within the Ferocious Beast corpses, providing the fundamental resources for the refinement!
In an instant, an enormous vortex of sha formed around Guiyuan.
Powerful Ferocious Beast corpses, each at least at the Taiyi level, were cast into the vortex's heart. As the four Great Dao laws refined them, their unwilling remnants let out silent howls.
In the end, they were forcibly crushed and refined into the skeletal frameworks of the Fierce Sha Treasures.
Blades, spears, swords, halberds, bells, pagodas, mirrors, banners... Thirty-three phantoms in all floated amid the sha, radiating the dreadful aura of calamity.
Meanwhile, Guiyuan sorted the corpses and scattered essence of Ferocious Beasts below the Taiyi level into three categories and refined them into pills:
The flesh and vital essence became Essence Qi Pills, which replenished blood and strengthened the body.
The Chaos Sha mixed with remnant souls became Fierce Sha Pills, which could be used to defile enemies or aid in cultivating certain special divine abilities.
The thin law fragments that had originated from Chaos Devil Gods became Chaos Dao Pills. Though impure, they could help one comprehend the Great Dao of Chaos, making them wondrous indeed.
Guiyuan had only just gained a first glimpse of the Great Dao of Chaos. Unlike the orderly Great Dao of the Primordial World, it was instead filled with disorder.
"Perhaps some innate beings became Ferocious Beasts because they devoted themselves to the Great Dao of Chaos."
Guiyuan casually crushed a Chaos Dao Pill.
He was still wondering: could the dead Chaos Devil Gods truly have created so many Ferocious Beasts?
From what he could see so far,
they weren't formed solely from Chaos Sha. Some innate beings had likely been tainted by the Great Dao of Chaos as well.
Guiyuan was like the most efficient of cleaners. Everywhere he went, the sha was devoured and the Ferocious Beast corpses were swept away.
Before leaving, he would even perform the Great Regression Technique!
A mysterious Dao rhythm of regression spread across the mountains and earth, ravaged by sha and the great battle.
They seemed to struggle backward through time, gradually regaining their former appearance. Their spiritual energy could not fully revive just yet, but the foundations for renewed life had already been laid.
As he cleared and restored the land, wisps and strands of dark-yellow Qi of Merit began gathering from every direction, silently merging into his fortune. They weren't abundant, but they flowed without end.
Guiyuan was quite pleased as he sensed those threads of merit.
After all, merit was a cure-all. It was excellent for refining treasures, improving cultivation, or protecting oneself.
"So clearing out the sha isn't difficult at all!"
At the same time, some of the vast amount of sha he had forcibly drawn into his body had seeped into his flesh, even though most of it had gone toward refining the Fierce Sha Treasures.
Far from rejecting it, Guiyuan raised an eyebrow.
"Hmm? This sha... seems to resonate with the inheritance of Mysterious Turtle Supporting the Heavens?"
With a slight movement of his thoughts, he set that seemingly useless Innate Inheritance into motion.
Sure enough, his body's tolerance for sha increased greatly. But cultivating this technique required an enormous amount of blood and qi to suppress and harmonize the sha. Otherwise, he would suffer a backlash.
"Perfect!" Guiyuan smiled. Inside the Heavenly Sha Pagoda, one of the Thirty-Three Fiendish Treasures he had just refined, were the Essence Qi Pills he had made.
The next moment,
tens of thousands of Essence Qi Pills dissolved.
Vast quantities of blood and qi surged through him, grinding against and blending with the sha that had invaded his body.
A faint black glow rose over his skin. In this strange balance, his body grew stronger, slowly but surely.
"Waste not, want not. This is an unexpected bonus."
He refined treasures, made pills, tempered his body, and accumulated merit as he advanced deeper into the Northern Continent.
He didn't know how long he had traveled or how many desolate, lifeless mountain ranges he had crossed.
Just as he finished clearing all the sha from a basin,
"ROAR—!!!"
