Wu Ling answered the phone quickly. After I explained what had happened, she told me rather seriously to wait a moment. Someone else soon picked up. It was Gu Mo on the other end.
"Turn on speakerphone and let me hear the sounds around you," Gu Mo said.
I did as he asked, turned on the speaker, and wandered around with my phone, looking a little lost.
Gu Mo sighed, his voice heavy. "All right."
"How is it?" I asked anxiously.
"I can't hear any souls," Gu Mo said. "From what you saw last night, there should be quite a few people in that neighborhood, and they've gotten used to their current situation."
My breath caught. "Could they be hiding?"
"If they were hiding, that would be good. The worse possibility is that they've been eaten." Gu Mo's tone turned calm. "If Ye Qing didn't do it, then Sun Bin might have. Nangong is already investigating. Once we find out, we'll handle it."
