We walked to the edge of the cliff and looked down. All we could see were jagged rocks jutting out of the water and waves crashing against them.

The entire face of the cliff was flat.

Just as Song Xian had said, it looked as if someone had taken a great blade to the rock and sliced it cleanly, leaving behind a smooth surface.

But judging by the rocks poking up out of the sea, that myth was probably just a story.

I looked at Wu Ling and Liu Miao.

Both of them were staring intently down at the cliff without saying a word. I couldn't tell if they were still observing or if they were reluctant to speak in front of the young soldier.

What I hadn't expected was for the soldier to speak first.

"You want to see the cave below, right? You'll have to wait until the tide goes out before you can enter, and you'll only have a short window. The tide will come back in an hour or two. It's pretty deep inside. If you don't make it out in time, you'll be in trouble."

A chill ran down the back of my neck.

"You can hear it, right? The cave should be flooded now. But there ought to be a gap..." The soldier came over to stand beside us and looked down as well.

I froze. Only then did I realize what the strange sound I'd heard was.

It wasn't the sound of ghosts or other supernatural beings. It was just a natural phenomenon.

But I couldn't see the gap he was talking about, no matter how long I looked.

"Let's go over now." Wu Ling straightened up and raised her head.

"Sure, that works." The soldier nodded.

He led us back, called over
