I felt as though I'd learned a lot, yet also as though I still knew nothing.

The history Wu Ling had told us meant little beyond showing me that the world was getting worse and worse.

Chen Yihan and Chen Xiaoqiu both looked thoughtful. I didn't know whether they were wondering what their special identities meant, or pondering the significance of that history.

I wanted to take something away from it too, but after thinking it over, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing.

Chen Xiaoqiu's phone rang, though it seemed the call was for Chen Yihan.

As the chief of the Public Security Bureau, Chen Yihan couldn't simply stop working as normal. He had plenty to deal with. He'd already been "slacking off" a little that evening.

"I need to get back to the bureau. How are you feeling?" Chen Yihan hung up and asked Chen Xiaoqiu.

"I'm fine. I feel completely normal," Chen Xiaoqiu said. "Go take care of work. I'm all right."

Chen Yihan nodded, then said goodbye to the rest of us before hurrying off.

Gu Mo stretched. "All right, let's call it a night too."

He'd treated some of his injuries while Wu Ling was performing the spell. From the sound of it, he didn't plan to go to the hospital.

Chen Xiaoqiu and I weren't badly hurt either, so there was no need for us to go.

Wu Ling gathered her things, and we got ready to leave.

I glanced back at the office, now a wreck, and hesitated. "So, that's it? Is Greenleaf going to be all right?"

"He's a ghost now. What does 'all right' even mean?" Gu Mo scoffed. "And even if there's a problem, we can't exactly call in a construction crew to fix it."

Gu Mo nodded
