Background

Ning Zhe was a senior-year student at Taoyuan City No. 1 High School who returned to his rural hometown, Ancient Tablet Town, because New World Group planned to acquire his family’s land and his illiterate grandparents needed his help with the demolition process. He was pulled into He Family Village after opening the gate of his old house. 2 33

Even before becoming an Ascendant, Ning Zhe was notably detached and self-sufficient. He performed well in school, had few material desires, did not smoke or drink, and rarely caused his grandparents concern. His lack of ordinary adolescent wants made him seem unnervingly unlike other children. 76

His grandparents later died after drinking liquor that had been drugged by Boss Chen’s brother-in-law, who had intended to target Ning Zhe out of jealousy. Ning Zhe later used Life-Buying Money to revive them, a choice he came to regret because it could draw the attention of other Ascendants. 140 143

Appearance

In his original form, Ning Zhe is a pale, lean, handsome young man with a scholarly air. His ordinary clothing is usually simple, clean, and practical rather than luxurious. 100 200

  • His hands are notably fair and delicate; Zhang Yangxu recognizes them from a photograph. 18
  • He frequently wears a fierce green-faced or blue-faced evil ghost mask while operating under assumed identities. 85 162
  • Taiyi allows him to reproduce other people’s faces, voices, physiques, clothing, mannerisms, and temperaments. 50 164
  • When his identities destabilize, his body can display snake scales, feathers, horns, mismatched limbs, extra eyes, mouths, and faces belonging to people whose identities he has taken. 51 73 240
  • After stabilizing himself in one instance, his left eye became amber-gold and his right eye silver-gray. 74

Personality

Ning Zhe is calm, analytical, and intensely survival-oriented. In Weird Events, he prioritizes identifying rules and preserving his own life over rescuing strangers, and is willing to let others face danger if doing so yields necessary information. 7 17 22

His caution is paired with exceptional decisiveness. Once he believes he has found the correct path, he acts quickly—whether infiltrating a dangerous location, stealing an identity, or provoking a god’s curse against an enemy. 32 240 392

Ning Zhe is also manipulative. He deliberately conditioned Feng Yushu’s dependence before branding her with a Thought Imprint compelling absolute obedience, viewing her powerful rules as a weapon he needed to retain. 74 100 Despite this, he is not entirely indifferent to those close to him; he protects Baizhi in Vanessa Castle, reassures Feng Yushu about his copies, and sometimes acts to reduce danger to others even when it offers him no direct benefit. 274 425 503

Awakening Origin worsens his most dangerous traits by making him impulsive, paranoid, irritable, and obsessive. Ning Zhe recognizes that a mistaken conclusion could become an irreversible Thought Imprint and lead him into catastrophe. 242 254

Abilities & Skills

Taiyi — Identity Theft and Imitation

Taiyi is a Wandering Ghost whose rule manipulates perception and identity. Ning Zhe can steal an identity as it exists in another person’s cognition, gaining associated memories and reproducing the target’s appearance, behavior, and—in limited cases—rules. 33 163

  • Can impersonate people such as Zhang Yangxu, Yu Ziqian, Feng Yushu, Van Dyke, and others well enough to deceive acquaintances. 56 75 213
  • Can become animals when observers mistake him for one, including magpies, turtledoves, cats, peregrine falcons, bees, and other birds. 32 75 220 431
  • Allows the use of living identities for Substitute Death, though Ning Zhe keeps few usable identities because accumulating memories destabilizes his self-perception. 39 229
  • Simulated rules are weaker than the genuine powers of a ghost or Ascendant. Taiyi’s imitation of Te Rang, for example, could only briefly injure Ye Tian. 74
  • Complete self-perceptions are particularly dangerous to steal because their memories and personality can overwhelm Ning Zhe’s own identity. 54 214 240

Zhaoyou — Snake God and Almanac

Zhaoyou is the original Snake God of He Family Village, whose identity Ning Zhe stole through Taiyi. Zhaoyou governs fortune, misfortune, taboos, and the Almanac. 33 35

  • Can avert bad luck and manipulate fortune-related outcomes. 348
  • The Almanac defines permitted activities and taboos; turning its pages can invoke severe punishment, including an Instant Death curse. 192 393
  • Ning Zhe can redirect the curse through Taiyi by making the Snake God perceive another target as himself. 393
  • Grants serpent-like transformations, including a giant snake form. 95
  • Zhaoyou’s vast memories and ancient emotional residue can erode Ning Zhe’s sense of self. 33 54

Awakening Origin — Thought Imprints

Awakening Origin is the god associated with Thought Imprints: beliefs that can become fixed and compel a target’s behavior. Ning Zhe first exploited a simulated version of this rule through Yu Ziqian’s identity, then later harnessed Awakening Origin itself. 163 240

  • Can plant commands in himself and others, including “I am Ning Zhe,” “I must never respond to a Ghost’s call,” and “I must never reveal Ning Zhe’s real name or true identity.” 163 181 229
  • Uses self-imprints to preserve his identity against Taiyi, Zhaoyou, stolen memories, and mental corruption. 194 240
  • Can bind ghosts to the belief that they are Ning Zhe, allowing them to inherit his memories and continue his objectives after his death. 251
  • Thought Imprints cannot be erased or overwritten; contradictory imprints instead drive the target insane. 242
  • Awakening Origin intensifies emotion into paranoia and obsession, making its user vulnerable to irrational conclusions and accidental self-imprinting. 242 436

Great Haunt and Collective Existence

By the later stages of his Ascension, Ning Zhe can create stand-ins and operate as a collective rather than a single body. 488 503

  • His stand-ins can inherit his selected memories, self-awareness, and simulated access to his broader Ascendant system. 488 503
  • Can transform into or act through numerous life forms, including birds, fish, insects, and ants. 503
  • A disconnected stand-in in Salt Province retained nearly all of Ning Zhe’s abilities and was considered powerful even among Ascendants. 488
  • Feng Yushu cannot reliably distinguish the original Ning Zhe from his copied selves; Ning Zhe promises that the one appearing before her will always be the original. 503

Investigation and Combat

Ning Zhe combines rapid deduction with practical violence. He routinely tests rules, reconstructs timelines, searches bodies, and uses available identities or terrain to turn hostile conditions to his advantage. 7 168 231

  • Identified the Lamp-Blowing Ghost’s rule in less than half an hour and immediately changed into a physically imposing identity to reverse the threat. 231
  • Can fight effectively in animal forms; as a magpie, he killed another magpie despite losing an eye. 32
  • Uses firearms, improvised weapons, stealth, and sudden transformations in direct combat. 60 335
  • Possesses Baizhi-derived “Inspiration,” an instinctive warning that alerts him to danger. 214 335

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Almanac — Zhaoyou’s taboo calendar, used to determine permitted activities, invoke curses, and manipulate fortune. 33 192
  • Evil ghost mask — Frequently worn while using false identities or confronting supernatural threats. 85 162
  • Compact mirror — Originally Xia Yubing’s; used by Ning Zhe to test and apply Thought Imprints to himself. 163 194
  • Life-Buying Money — Copper coins obtained through Fortune God’s transactions; Ning Zhe uses them in dealings involving death and resurrection. 136 223
  • Special notebook — Used to communicate with Xia Yubing and for identity-related plans. 194 234
  • Music box — Acquired from Daoist Duan Geng after it was used to hypnotize the Lamp-Blowing Ghost. 238
  • Pocket watch — A rose-and-thorn watch with sword-shaped hands; Ning Zhe uses its stored time to summon vast numbers of temporary Lu Zhaoyi instances. 454 495
  • Rong Kong’s third hand — Once granted the ability to steal objects under conditions; later lost to Prumelia. 425 482

Relationships

  • Feng Yushu — Initial survival companion in He Family Village. Ning Zhe gradually made her dependent on him, then branded her with an obedience-oriented Thought Imprint; she later remains one of his closest allies and fears losing the “real” Ning Zhe to his copies. 7 74 503
  • BaizhiFeng Yushu’s daughter and an Urban Legend Player whose intuition helps identify Weird rules. Ning Zhe stole her self-perception to replicate her sixth sense, then protected her during the Vanessa Castle incident. 43 214 274
  • Xia Yubing — A streamer Ning Zhe was hired to retrieve from Zanju Town. She became dependent on him after witnessing his powers; the two later completed an engagement and developed a romantic relationship. 162 234 366
  • Taiyi — Wandering Ghost whose identity-stealing rule forms the foundation of Ning Zhe’s Ascendant system. Ning Zhe branded it with the belief that it is Ning Zhe. 33 240 251
  • Zhaoyou — The Snake God of He Family Village. Ning Zhe stole its identity and later used its Almanac and fortune-averting rule against Fenwu. 33 364 393
  • Fenwu — Longstanding Ascendant and Ning Zhe’s principal enemy. Fenwu seeks Zhaoyou’s rule to compensate for his bad luck, while Ning Zhe repeatedly targets his identities, memories, and core rule. 100 348 410
  • Lan Shiwen — Uneasy ally, rival, and source of predictive information. Ning Zhe has exploited Lan Shiwen’s instability and repeatedly prepared for conflict with him. 249 251 473
  • Prumelia — A loyal subordinate who accepts Ning Zhe’s strategic decisions without question. She temporarily held Zhaoyou and later won several of Ning Zhe’s ghosts in a game. 364 482
  • Yu Ziqian — Ascendant whose identity Ning Zhe impersonated and later used to harness Awakening Origin. Ning Zhe revived Yu Ziqian for information on Fenwu, then killed him and absorbed his memories. 75 239 240
  • Zhang Hanying and Zhang Yunwen — Yu Ziqian’s devoted sisters/companions, whose loyalty to “Yu Ziqian” allows Ning Zhe to maintain his impersonation and entrust Yin Lishang to them. 128 206
  • Grandfather and Grandmother — Ning Zhe’s only close family during his student years. Their deaths and his later attempt to revive them reveal one of the few times he acted on an openly emotional impulse. 76 140 143
