Background / History

Lin Ting was discovered by Duan Ya after the latter took Yun Luo as a direct disciple. His rapid rise from Qi Induction to Foundation Establishment and his wood-spiritual-root aptitude made him Duan Ya's favored disciple, while Yun Luo was increasingly neglected within their shared lineage. 1

After Yun Luo repeatedly rejected his requests for dual cultivation, Lin Ting developed a grudge against her. He attempted to force himself on her, stole the Heavenly Grade Purple Jade Lotus, and framed her for its theft. Once Yun Luo's Spiritual Root had been crippled and she was confined at Thought Reflection Cliff, he and Gu Wei planned to eliminate her; Lin Ting personally pushed her off the cliff. 1 20

Mu He later exposed Lin Ting's motives with a Beguiler Technique. Unable to control his speech, he admitted that Yun Luo's cultivation speed, despite her lesser talent, and her rejection of him had driven his resentment. Mu He destroyed his Spiritual Root in retribution. 3

By the time of the Gui Xu Secret Realm, Lin Ting's Spiritual Root had been restored. Yun Luo learns that the powerful Chen family of White Deer City is connected to his recovery and provides the Heavenly Star Sect with resources for his benefit. 18 19 He repeatedly antagonizes Yun Luo, hires rogue cultivators to kill her, and is later robbed by Yun Luo and her senior sisters. 20 24 25

During the aftermath of the robbery, Yun Luo secretly attaches a Beguiler Demon Talisman to him. Its effect draws unwanted attention from both his fellow disciples and cultivators of the Piaomiao Sect; he is abducted, later found bruised and traumatized, and recognizes Yun Luo as responsible. 25 26 Despite this, he remains fixated on revenge when he hears Yun Luo has entered the forbidden zone. 31

Personality

Lin Ting is arrogant, ambitious, and deeply entitled. He assumes Yun Luo's refusal of dual cultivation is a tactic to gain his attention, and he cannot accept that a disciple he considers inferior would reject him. 1

His resentment is fueled by jealousy. Though he possesses greater natural aptitude, he is angered that Yun Luo's diligence allows her cultivation to nearly match his own. He is willing to steal, frame others, arrange murder, and hire outside attackers to preserve his position and satisfy his grudge. 3 24 25

Following his abduction in the secret realm, Lin Ting becomes physically and emotionally shaken, but the experience intensifies rather than resolves his hatred of Yun Luo. 26 31
