The hazy morning light crept through the floor-to-ceiling windows, leaving fine specks of light upon the dining table.
The sandwich rested quietly on a jade-like plate. The edges of the toasted, golden-brown bread curled slightly, releasing a faint aroma of wheat, while the serrated cut revealed layers of stacked fillings inside.
The yogurt sauce made from snow sheep milk had a crystalline texture, intertwining with the crisp, dewy vegetable leaves. Slices of fruit tomato, with their sweet and tangy fragrance, were tucked into the gaps alongside ham slices that overflowed with savory meatiness, the depth of their texture concealing a century's worth of energy.
The transparent glass was veiled in white mist, and every drop of the delicate, hot milk promised to awaken the diner's taste buds.
"This should be fine." Looking at his masterpiece, Nan Liujing nodded with satisfaction. Having eaten Mu Ye's cooking for so long, he had surely learned a thing or two.
"Did you make this sandwich?"
A soft, gentle voice came from behind. Nan Liujing turned around subconsciously, only to see Leng Yaozhu standing there in a silk nightgown.
It was a conservative style, yet the nightgown was clearly somewhat thin, making the top-tier, fiery curves of the mature woman prominently stand out. Her long, bright red hair was pinned up, with a few stray strands hanging behind her ears, accentuating a neck as delicate as moonlight.
Clearly, in Leng Yaozhu's eyes, Nan Liujing was still a child, so she did not mind the impact her appearance might cause.
Nan Liujing shifted his gaze slightly. "I made two portions. Please have a taste, Teacher."
Leng Yaozhu became interested; at her cultivation level, she had no need to eat at all.
"Then I must give it a try."
Her fair, jade-like hand picked up the fragrant sandwich, and under Nan Liujing's expectant gaze, she parted her red lips and took a light bite.
But after chewing only a few times, she froze. A hazy, rhythmic sensation drifted through her wine-red pupils, as if she had fallen into a peculiar state of mind.
Nan Liujing was somewhat puzzled.
Even if the sandwich was delicious, it shouldn't be to this extent, right?
Besides, as a Spirit Pagoda Vice Tower Master, how could she be short of gourmet food?
Leng Yaozhu seemed to have forgotten Nan Liujing's existence. After taking that bite, her gaze remained fixed on the gap in the sandwich, and she remained silent for a long time.
Nan Liujing asked in a low voice, "Is it not good?"
"No." Leng Yaozhu reacted quickly. She shook her head, her tone tinged with a sense of loss, yet also a joy of rediscovery. "Can you make a sandwich for Teacher every day from now on?"
Nan Liujing glanced at the black cloth bracelet on his snow-white wrist. He understood something, and smiled. "Of course, no problem."
Leng Yaozhu smiled back. "You eat too. Afterward, I will take you to the place where you will cultivate."
"Yes."
Leng Yaozhu tasted the sandwich again; with every bite, she seemed to be reminiscing about something.
Nan Liujing did not know that in his teacher's memories, a girl with exceptional cultivation talent but zero life skills always stubbornly tried to make food herself, then used her sister as a test subject. The thing she made most often was, in fact, a sandwich.
From the initially inedible versions to the ones later devoured with gusto—but after that one day, no familiar girl ever let her sister taste her cooking again. The taste had been separated by half a century, and now, it felt like a reunion.
The fifty-fifth floor of the Spirit Pagoda.
Leng Yaozhu brought Nan Liujing to a rather special area. The moment they stepped inside, they could see many gaming pods similar to those described in online gaming novels.
In the spacious room, there were over a dozen staff members in white uniforms. Perhaps because it was still early, all the "gaming pods" remained in an inactive state.
"Vice Tower Master." The lead staff member walked over and greeted her respectfully.
Leng Yaozhu smiled faintly. "Prepare a Law Chamber."
"Yes." The man acted immediately.
Leng Yaozhu said to Nan Liujing, "The Law Chamber connects to a virtual world, similar to a Mimic Cultivation Environment. You will enter a very special environment shortly. While enduring it, you must also strive to comprehend it with your heart."
After a brief instruction, Leng Yaozhu let Nan Liujing choose a Law Chamber and lie down inside.
As the chamber door closed and wisps of energy were injected within, Nan Liujing's consciousness shifted instantly.
"Rumble!"
When he opened his eyes again, what greeted him was a waterfall of unknown height.
The water seemed to pour down from the Milky Way, crashing violently against the bottom. Brilliant splashes sprayed outward, and waves drifted from the surface, creating ripples. The sheer impact was such that Nan Liujing could barely steady his footing.
In the room, Leng Yaozhu stood with her arms crossed, calmly watching Nan Liujing on the screen as he observed the waterfall.
The Unbending Staff Technique, created by the Qian Gu Family based on the Dragon Subduing Staff Martial Soul, emphasized one thing: the word "Break"!
Using the Profound Meaning of Breaking to shatter the Plane Law and then assimilating it for one's own use—that was how the world-shaking Unbending Staff Technique was born.
The Unbending Staff Technique was like pitting oneself against heaven and earth; the resistance and pressure encountered during the process were incredibly staggering. Furthermore, if the user wanted to break the law, they first had to comprehend the law; otherwise, how could they talk about breaking it?
The Law Chamber was established by the Qian Gu Family despite all opposition, though that was a thousand years ago. With the passage of time, any outstanding genius who joined the Spirit Pagoda had one chance every week to come here and receive Law Comprehension in different environments.
Even Leng Yaozhu herself had once contemplated for a long time within a volcano that constantly erupted with magma; this was one of the reasons why her True Phoenix Fire was so powerful.
Nan Liujing's Dragon Subduing Staff Martial Soul was not the Evil Vanquishing Dragon Soul and did not possess the quality of "unbending," but the lightning associated with the Thunder Dragon Soul was tyrannical and upright. It was about forcing heaven to submit to him, rather than letting it suppress him and force him to endure pressure.
Having Nan Liujing experience the Law Chamber was Qiangu Qingfeng's idea. He wanted Nan Liujing to lay a solid foundation now so that in the future, he could use the Unbending Staff Technique to pioneer a staff style belonging to the Thunder Dragon Soul.
"Such rich wind and water elements."
As his gaze swept over the waves brushing across the water, Nan Liujing seemed to sense something. With the help of the Plane Imprint, he was very familiar with the initial experience of various elements.
He was currently nearly a hundred meters away from the base of the waterfall. By releasing his Mental Power, he could sense that for every ten meters he moved forward, the elemental intensity would jump a level, and the impact would become even stronger.
Nan Liujing took a deep breath and stepped forward with unwavering resolve.
The Plane Imprint was like a foundation as steady as Mount Tai; it guaranteed one's baseline, but it could not guarantee one's ceiling. A person's future still had to be walked by themselves.
The difficulty of that first step exceeded Nan Liujing's expectations. The wind element acted like an exclusionary wall, constantly pushing him backward, while the water element within felt like a mischievous kid throwing secret elbows, striking his face and body every now and then.
Nan Liujing did not blindly charge forward. Instead, he stopped and let his entire body relax, spreading his arms to let the wind and rain wash over him.
He acted as if he had become a part of nature itself, experiencing the elemental impact on every part of his body.
The fluttering, the ravages, and the flow of the wind; in contrast, the softness and dominance of the water, a perfect balance of hardness and softness.
This scene caused Leng Yaozhu's willow eyebrows to relax noticeably, and a hint of interest colored her wine-red pupils.
To be honest, she had taken this disciple mostly because of the benefits Qiangu Qingfeng had proposed.
But now, this child had truly piqued her interest.
Nighttime.
A massive city wall separated Shrek Inner City from the Outer Court.
The delicate silver-haired girl stood beneath the wall, her temperament like a blue lotus—refined and otherworldly. She watched the young man walking toward her with a smile in her eyes.
"Have you eaten?" Nan Liujing walked up and habitually ruffled Na'er's hair.
Na'er narrowed her eyes like a small kitten and took the initiative to link her arm with her brother's.
"Not yet, I was waiting for you."
"Order whatever you want later, Ge is treating," Nan Liujing said dotingly.
Just as he had guessed, Na'er had successfully awakened her martial soul, which remained the Silver Dragon Spear. She had joined Shrek Academy as usual and had even quickly taken Yun Ming as her master.
He didn't know how Bi Ji had managed it, but she had actually bypassed Yun Ming's perception.
"Two seniors, is there any problem with me bringing my brother into the Inner City?"
The city wall, used ten thousand years ago to resist the Beast Tide, had now evolved into the dividing line between the academy and the Outer Court, guarded by students in dark green uniforms.
"Of course not. Junior, would you like a guidebook to help you get around?" After taking the ID card handed over by Na'er, the two young men, who looked to be about fourteen or fifteen, suddenly brightened up.
They had seen Na'er standing under the wall for a while, appearing to be waiting for someone. Seeing a young punk approach and act so close to her, they had wanted to shout at him to let go of their junior, but they hadn't expected him to be the girl's brother.
This wasn't a punk at all—he was a handsome guy!
"No thank you," Na'er politely declined.
With permission granted, the two walked into the antique-style Inner City together.
Compared to the Outer Court, the entire Inner City was exceptionally quiet. The streets were wide and paved with blue bricks, and the visible architectural styles leaned toward the ancient, with some even being wooden structures.
Warm yellow lights dispersed the darkness, leaving hazy shadows on the ground and the surrounding vegetation.
Many shared bicycles were parked along the road, convenient for scanning and riding. After all, in the Ancient Era, the Inner City had a permanent population of several million; it was simply too large.
As the wheels rolled over the ground, there was almost no gap between the blue bricks, avoiding the embarrassment of "deep water bombs" soaking shoes and pant legs.
The soft night breeze brushed past the strands of hair falling to the girl's ears, appearing like flowing moonlight in the dark.
Neither Nan Liujing nor Na'er spoke, simply enjoying the tranquility in comfort.
Occasionally, someone inside a building would hear the rolling of wheels and peek out, but they would only catch a glimpse of silver flashing by.
"There are quite a lot of people here."
As they rode along, the siblings arrived at a brightly lit street. Many young people were walking about nearby, along with some ordinary residents who had been granted permission by the academy to live in the Inner City.
Nan Liujing scanned the numerous storefronts. "Na'er, what do you want to eat?"
Na'er was indeed a bit hungry; she blinked, struggling to lock onto a target for the night.
A milk tea shop called "Three Dances' Absolute Love" caught her attention because it had the most customers and seemed very lively.
"Ge, how about we grab a drink first?"
"That works."
Nan Liujing wasn't picky. He followed Na'er's gaze and his expression froze.
"Three Dances' Absolute Love... won't we turn into people with a 'Love Brain' after drinking this?"
The two parked their shared bicycles and headed toward the shop.
It was indeed crowded inside, primarily with students wearing the dark green Shrek Outer Court uniforms. Servers constantly wove through the crowd, delivering drinks to the patrons.
What was peculiar was that the milk tea shop actually had a resident singer. They weren't top-tier, but their voice fit the shop's atmosphere perfectly.
Na'er couldn't wait to pull Nan Liujing over to choose a drink.
When he saw the prices, he nearly choked—even the cheapest lemonade cost five hundred Federation Coins. If Xiao Xue were here, she would have a field day.
However, this high price was exclusive to students, or they could use Contribution Points at an exchange rate of one to one hundred.
Na'er had trouble choosing and was still hesitating. Nan Liujing randomly picked a lemonade and scanned his surroundings.
It was no wonder this shop was so busy; the servers were all pretty girls. While they weren't wearing JK uniforms, they had a uniform look with black skirts and white vests. It wasn't revealing, but it had a unique charm.
As he watched, the figure of one server caught Nan Liujing's attention.
Her skin was deathly pale, and paired with her dark red short hair, the stark contrast gave her the appearance of someone recovering from a grave illness, inadvertently adding a touch of fragility. Yet, this girl was the most beautiful among the group, though her eyes were hollow, like a machine devoid of all emotion.
A name suddenly leaped into his mind.
Yuan En Yehui!
In terms of age, Yuan En Yehui was only a year or so older than him, but because she had enrolled very early, she was a grade ahead of Tang Wulin and the others in the Original Timeline.
Nan Liujing's eyes Slightly Moved as he began to carefully recall the memories of his past life.
Yuan En Yehui had left home at around the age of eight and was sent to Shrek Academy. Everything stemmed from the rampaging Fallen Angel Martial Soul of her mother, who had lost control and summoned the Demon Gate. Countless demons emerged from it, causing immense destruction to the Yuanen Family and resulting in thirty-seven deaths.
Later, Yuan En Yehui's mother, overcome with self-reproach, chose to commit suicide. Her father had also attempted to take his own life to follow his wife, but he was stopped and sealed by Yuan En Yehui's grandfather, Yuanen Zhentian, and Yun Ming working together.
Afterward, the entire Yuanen Family acted as if they had lost the ability to speak; aside from sending her to Shrek Academy, they offered no explanation whatsoever, forcing Yuan En Yehui to harbor hatred for many years until the misunderstanding was finally cleared up much later.
Just as Nan Liujing was thinking this, Yuan En Yehui's expression suddenly tightened. After delivering the drink in her hand, she hurried to the front counter to find the manager wearing a name tag.
The two chatted briefly, and Yuan En Yehui turned and left the Milk Tea Shop almost immediately. Through the glass window, Nan Liujing soon lost sight of even her silhouette.
Nan Liujing frowned. With his Mental Power, it was not difficult to perceive that Yuan En Yehui's mental fluctuations were abnormal at this moment.
However, the Original Timeline did not provide much detail for the character at this age, and he could not guess the specific reason.
"Ge."
A cool sensation brushed against his arm. Nan Liujing quickly snapped back to reality to see Na'er tilting her head, obediently holding up a packed lemonade.
Nan Liujing smiled and took it, suppressing the doubts in his heart. After all, they were at Shrek Academy; it was impossible for anything to happen to Yuan En Yehui.
Na'er linked her arm with his. Though still young, one could already glimpse the peerless beauty she would become, attracting sidelong glances from quite a few students.
Under the envious gazes of several Male Students, Nan Liujing chose a hotpot restaurant, similar to the beef hotpot of the Guangdong region in his past life.
If the people around them had been marveling at the girl's beauty earlier, by the time they reached the end of the meal and the stack of plates stood higher than two adults, the onlookers' amazement had turned into horror.
"Satisfying!"
As she put down her plate, Na'er licked her rosy lips, feeling immensely satisfied.
Although she didn't inherit world-shaking intelligence, having a monstrous appetite was quite good too.
Being able to eat is a blessing, after all!
Regarding the age setting for Yuan En Yehui, there have been several versions in the original work. I have used the setting where she is a year or so older than the Male Protagonist.
In reality, the setting for Yuan En Yehui's entry into Shrek conflicts between the early and late stages. The early part says she entered at twelve and stayed for three years, making her fifteen. However, later on, it is learned from Yuanen Tianzhen in the Yuanen Family that at the age of seven, due to the incident with the Demon Plane, the family suffered a great disaster, and she was sent to Shrek not long after.
