"This was the rune combination for the Levitation Charm. Now let's test it." Lily tapped a rune with her wand, and the rune, made up of several Runic Alphabet characters, lit up.
She then channeled a surge of magic through her wand. It passed through the rune and shot toward a quill, which promptly floated into the air. Anduin could clearly sense that Lily hadn't cast the Levitation Charm. The magic had simply passed through the rune and acted on the quill, producing the same effect.
Anduin was amazed. This was much more intuitive than learning about runes from books.
But Lily wasn't finished. "The effects of many spells and runes are very dangerous, or can't be tested directly on a workbench. Some highly skilled wizards can conjure runes through Silent Spellcasting and test them that way. But wizards who can use Silent Spell proficiently are few and far between. So what do you do if you can't cast silently?" She picked up a small object that looked like a crystal ball from beside the workbench and brought it close to the rune. The rune was sucked right into the crystal ball.
Anduin noticed two whole rows of crystal balls beside the workbench. At first, he'd assumed they were decorations, but it turned out they were used to store runes.
"That's how you save a rune, so you can test it somewhere else." Lily cheerfully explained how to use the Rune Workbench.
Anduin was utterly dazzled and couldn't help becoming deeply interested in Rune Research.
"You can use the workbench here during the few days you're staying with us. It contains a lot of characters, so you can study them alongside the Runic Dictionary. I'll also explain some common rune combinations to you, including the Protective Rune and Stress Rune
